I know it's super entry level, but it's a Strat and it should be good to learn on. My good friend gave it to me as a birthday gift. I need an amp, headphones, cables, etc. I plan on picking up Rocksmith for my PS3 and eventually taking some lessons.

    nice man.

one of the cheapest ways to get started, especially in apartment, is to get one of these vox headphone amps.
    http://www.musiciansfriend.com/amplifiers-effects/vox-amplug-2-classic-rock-guitar-headphone-amp

there's an ac30 model (cleans) that might interest you, but the classic rock tone is probably want you want in a strat. you can get the clean by rolling back the guitar volume knob a bit and some crunch with it on 10. There's a metal model (distortion) as well, but the single coil pick up strats aren't good for that high gain sound.

you won't need a cable or an amp with that, just plug it in to the guitar, and plug your headphones into the unit. not sure how the rocksmith works...

I screwed around with rocksmith for a little bit. It's alright but it doesn't launch you into the explanations or tutorials that you need to get further. It's a good way to play along with songs that you like. So you'll play a song and be like oh yeah I tore it up. Then you'll go to level up and you'll be like wtfm8. What does this mean. I wound up just picking up a guitar tab book for 1039 smoothed out slappy hours and beating it out whenever I get bored. I'm not a rock star, I should learn my scales, and chords but I can play things that sound like songs sometimes.

I've got an epiphone les paul goth, and an sg400 in worn cherry. I think I like looking at them as much or maybe more than I like playing them though.

Nice, I'll look into the Vox. I have a friend who is in a pretty well known band out here in Seattle. His wife offered him up to give me lessons. lol

Nice man, I played guitar as a kid. I should say I took 6 months of lessons as a kid. Could never get the hang of it. I have an acoustic and a DVD and book but it's freaking hard.

Start posting some vids when you get the hang of it.

In guitar town I bought this old Epiphone
Started stringin' chords and words into songs
I've been putting in time on Sixteenth Avenue
Pouring out my heart for tips on a stool
I ain't making a killing, but then there's those nights
When the song comes together and hits 'em just right
The crowds on their feet cause they can't get enough
Of this music I make and I love
    And I thank God I ain't, yea I thank God I ain't,
Man I thank God I ain't, what I almost was

So i've been sitting on this for too long. The new job, travel, etc have really distracted from getting my ass in gear. Plus I didn't want to spend any money that I didn't have to. Well anyway, i finally bought the headphone amp that B suggested, i have my picks, guitar stand, and strap.

What's the best tool to start learning? Books? Online videos on Youtube? Where do I go from here?

Do you know anything about music? ie, notes, chords? if you don't, you need to start there. maybe read a few things on 'intro to music theory' searches.

If you know what a basic chord structure is, major vs minor tonalities, and so forth, it will make learning guitar much easier.

if you get that, learn 2 or 3 chords to start. I suggest D major, A major and G major as a first 3. You can play like 15000 songs with those 3 chords alone and are all different shapes, so it will build dexterity and muscle memory.

I took a music class in college, where I learned to read music. It was all on piano though. Is there a good "guitar for beginners" book or video recommendation? I checked amazon and there were 500 books and cds rated at 4* or better. it's hard to filter through it.

Hey nick (and the every bodies), I like songsterr (website or app) and rocksmith on the PS. Mostly my advice is find some music you love and figure out why that is, then jam with it. I like to learn chords required to play songs I like and then figure out rhythm and strum or picking patterns required - I'm not big on solo beedly beedly stuff though. ;)

Post pics of you with the gear for max points!
