okay the desktop is old, parts of it can be re used on the new computer though

    salvage
    2006 All-in-wonder ATI video card
    2X 500MB strips of RAM
    brand new DVD RW drive

so I guess I need to talk to a company that can build me a computer

    4ish GB processor
top of the line soundblaster card
1 dvd rom drive, but wired for two with a space empty
1 160GB hard drive, again wired for two with a slot left empty (160gig HD coming out of the xbox this summer)
    windows vista

I don't want a monitor, mouse, etc. Just a tower built to specs.

    who should I call?

    DVD is fine for me

the last time I bought a computer was 2002 and it still bangs away at any program/game I can buy. I need Vista cause I don't plan on buying another computer for another 5 years

but it's time is running out, that's technology

I looked at that site but it doesn't look like they build computers

The decision is, quite literally, the lesser of two evils.

vista isnt bad. the reason most people think vista sucks is because its DIFFERENT than the OS they have been using since 1995.

another good reason is fucktards install vista on hardware that is more than a year old, which is a big no-no in the M$ upgrade guide. not recommended.

this still hasn't awnsered the, "where can a get it custom built" question

maybe build it myself? I can swap parts and install software, you think I can do it?

I mean literally if I can throw components into a tower, put the Vista disk in the disk drive, and go to town then I'm building

It isn't. Check newegg, they always have good prices. Might be able to save some cash on a combo deal.

SLI is nVidia's way to couple video cards. You install two vidcards, flip a plate on the board/adjust settings, attach the connector on the two cards and you're ready to roll. If you do INTENSE gaming, you might want to consider this option. It can get very pricey depending on the cards you use.

    two video cards?

My current motherboard has a video card built in but it sucks ass (vaio desktop circa 2002)

I updated it with the ATI all in wonder 2006, which I love

    why two video cards?

Putting two or more SLI video cards into SLI mode combines them. Basically it's like Voltron for vidcards. They combine and you use the power of both as a single card. The end result is video processing power that a single card by itself cannot supply. If you need to play a FPS at 1600x1200 resolution, you'll need SLI.

Let's go nVidia force! (insert Voltron theme music)

It doesn't require you to use SLI, but having the option is nice for future upgrades.

If your video card is from an older PC, you need to make sure it's a PCI Express card...

    That's a PCI Express card.

    If your card is AGP...

Then your card will not work with that board. Unfortunately AGP boards are becoming a bit of an endangered species... I would recommend getting a new video card. You can get yourself a budget Express card and then drop for the big guns when you are ready.
