My company Test drove one of these today.

Gillig Corporation - BRT

It gets an astounding 8mpg, as opposed to the normal 5. Granted we do need a couple more 40 footers since one of ours burnt a couple years ago, but I can't imagine that this thing starts at less than 500,000, whereas the other ones are about 250,000/pop. And I don't want to see what the repair bill is gonna be when the battery dies.

so that will save the company about $22,500 per 100k miles traveled, at $3 per gallon.
5mpg = 20,000 gallons per 100k, 8mpg = 12500 gallons per 100k, 7500 gallons($3)
if gas is $4/gal the savings goes to 30k

whats the normal life of a bus?

Oldest one we have is an 86, which is the same year as the one that caught on fire two years ago. But it's my understanding that they were rebuilt from the ground up in the past decade, so other than that we just bought a whole bunch of '98 30 footers, and they seem to be doing all rightish. Fucked up the turbo in one the other day, so they're not the best condition.
