I've put about 5000 miles on my ls swap, I feel like something is missing... Like in the 6000 rpm and up range. I have been anti-vtec, but now it seems that is all i need. I just want opinions on this upgrade whether it is worth money/time. How people enjoy their vtec's.

I loved my B20/VTEC setups, but you can make pretty respectable power with a compression bump and non-VTEC cams. It's generally easier than a head swap. Examples- A B20 on Honda-Tech is making 164whp with all stock internals and Crower 404 cams. A B18 with Crower 404 (or 405) cams and good tuning made 175whp on here.

that is not bad at all. I am more concerned on the cost side of things. If it cost the same to get cams and increase compression as is does for ls/vtec materials. I don't mind the work. I would have to pull the head anyways to raise compression. That is good insperation and it would keep me non vtec, which I like. I would like to get close to 200 hp. I think that would be ideal for the rex. 175 i think would keep me content for a little while.

Thanks for that. Just what I needed, going to price up both and see.

Or you could get a turbo and when you get bored of the power its making you can bump it up and get it retuned.

The thought of turbo may have crossed my mind. I don't have a couple grand to play with right now. I am looking to spend about 1000 or less on the next upgrade. 1000 is easier to explain to the woman. Maybe I should look into a homeade turbo.

I do alot of highway driving so I do like the ls tranny. It is not bad, it just needs a little more power. If I did not do much highway driving I would be all over a b16 tranny. I had a zc in the car before, not positive on the tranny that is in it. The rpm's were about 4500 at 120km/h. With the ls I'm about 3750 at 120km/h. I think it was just the si tranny. It was nice and peppy, but I like a longer pull, so what I need is MORE POWER.

It pulls like a demon from about 3500-5500 rpm's then it seems to lack top end. I'm sure a p n p would make a world of difference, but too much money. I could have probably all the parts for ls/vtec for the same price as a p n p. I have been pricing out turbo setups. They can be had for fairly cheap. I have to read more about engine management first. Maybe visit some local shops for prices on chipping/tuning. It looks like i can do a cheap turbo for under 1000 dollars, before tuning.

I just found a gsr head for 650 with everything included. I just emailed him about the ecu. It is most likely a newer head like late 90's.

b16 tranny w/ ls 5th gear for freeway driving.. done...

even if you get a vtec head.. you'll need better gearing still.. ls tranny will drop you out of vtec when you shift

I don't think I'm ready for picking apart trannies. That does sound nice though. I'm more concerned on the difficulty of the ls/vtec being worth while.

That's why I suggested a turbo setup, a hmt can be done for next to nothing, It dosent look like you want to much power, just a bit more omf.

That is just it. I would like to stay non-vtec and n/a. Then again I am cheap. I joined Homemadeturbo.com and have been reading a bit around there. Ryma do you have any links to cheap skate ls turbo builds. I have been and will continue to look for ls builds. My main worry is engine management I have no experience with that, but I have an interest to learn. This car is now my everyday driver now that my woman has license and has taken over the truck. I was thinking about slowly piecing together a turbo but I want to learn more about engine management to feel confident enough to go ahead with it. I would like to just chip my ecu and learn to tune from there. I wouldn't mind taking it to a shop for a tune but I like to be confident on all angles myself before commiting.

Well if you can get a manifold, go get a turbo in a junk yard and have it rebuilt, then go to a exhaust shop and have the down pipe made, intercooler piping on ebay I hear works in a pinch.

    Shop around, check out prices.

That part I'm not worried about it is the engine management that i'm worried about. I will have to get those prices first. I have a couple shops in mind
