So I've got a few hundred acres out in west Texas that's belonged to my family since a long fuckin' time ago...there are a shitload of old cars/trucks on one part of the land behind where one of my great uncles used to live...I went out there today with the intent to bring back the 50something Bel Air that was out there...well, apparently someone had it hauled off (or stole the damn thing) at some point in time, and it was gone....but since there are a shitload of miscellaneous vehicles out there, I went ahead and browsed around to see if there was anything else worth a shit.

    And I came across this:

it's a 1949 Chevrolet...um...pickup, I guess. It's got a straight-6 in it that probably hasn't been cranked since the late 50's...missing all the glass except for the driver's side window (which is rolled down and wouldn't roll back up), and there's a good bit of surface rust...the only spot that's rusted through is a fist-sized spot on the driver's side rear bottom of the cab...other than that everything that's there is in decent condition (for what it is)...there's an extra set of rear fenders, an extra tailgate, the hood, front grille, some body panels that I'm not sure what they are, and one of the front fenders in the back of the truck. I'm guessing at one point in time someone was going to attempt to restore it, but gave up. A buddy of mine in Lufkin has a 53 that's fully restored, and he has a plethora of spare body parts for it...

the cool part is, I called up my uncle to haul a tractor out to pull the truck out (since it's sunk down quite a few inches in the dirt), and he said he's still got the title for it. Apparently my great-grandfather bought the truck new in '48, and didn't care much for it, so it pretty much got used as a farm truck for a while and then parked.

Now I've just gotta scrounge up an 82 Cutlass chassis, an LS1, and a couplea turbos, and I'll be all set to run some 11's :D

thats cool, but that truck needs ALOT of work.

ground up restos can get pretty expensive.

props to you though if you have the necessary means to get it done.

eh... ive seen Porsche 356s in worst condition than that brought back to show stopping condition
of course the people getting that done have more money than god and dont mind the idea of throwing $150k+ at a restoration project

Take one fender, take it to a professional sandblaster, and see if he can clean off the rust completely without popping holes in the metal...if he can, then the truck might be salvageable. You will learn the art of metalwork, leading, and bondo. IF you build up a rat rod before me...I will hate you. I've been wanting a decent rat rod for the last year.

be better off buying one almost done...

if you want a rat rod, its gotta be rusty...thats one of the main things in a rat rod. that and/or flat black paint.

and Blanco...i didnt say make it a lowrider. a lowrider has wire wheels, bass boat paint jobs and murals of Jesus painted all over it. i said to chop, channel and bag it...thats hot rod style not lowrider style. IF Wil goes that route, 20" billet wheels with a DEEP lip that will tuck will look REALLY nice on there.

You should look into using a chassis from a later model truck. I know that a lot of guys do that for the 60-66 trucks. That way you can get parts easier and have the engine already in there.

Going to use the chassis from a 82 Caprice. I know a guy back home that built up a 54, and he got me a parts list of all the shit he used.

And the rust isn't going to be a problem...I'm decent with bodywork, I don't forsee that being a problem. The only thing that I'm doing to this truck that I don't have any experience with is chopping/channeling...

    and I'm not putting 20's on it. It's getting 06 Z06 wheels.
