I live in the SF bay area and I've been searching crazedlist for the west coast and I found that most of the listings that have the car I want at the price I want are all in Southern California and I'm wondering is my asking for a $2200 working '96 Civic LX 4 door, white, M/T with A/C and Radio etc. etc. even possible up in the Bay Area? Most of the cars listed on Craigslist for the Bay Area are around $3500 which is out of my price range. I have points that I COULD use to fly down to LA but I'm a little worried about arriving and discovering the car is in far worse shape than I could've imagined. I also heard that some people on craigslist go way over the top with their prices because they're expecting Low Ballers, if so, does that really mean that someone listing at $3500 is really expecting to sell at $2500 or something like that?

Also as for tips in buying a car, should I buy a scan tool to check the car before purchasing or should I just avoid a car with a check engine light?

Instead of worrying about all of this, why don't you just drive one of the numerous vehicles that get more then acceptable gas mileage that your dad offered to you for free?

Oh wait, I forgot, you're a jobless ass-hat who's got nothing better to do then troll Internet forums...

None of them get acceptable mileage, none of them are my vehicles, and please, if you can, answer the question.

Bullshit, they get 30+ mpg, and what does it matter if your name is on the title or not? It's not like you have any money to buy a car any way, especially a car that you plan to swap the motor and transmission out on and do all kinds of structural reinforcements to make safer.

These outlandish criterions that you have for a vehicle are just excuses for you to try and justify why you don't have a job...

EDIT: Now whine some more about how you don't get your ass kissed for being less of a leach then your sister...

30+? What are you talking about? Maybe on the highway they get 30mpg+ but I do mostly city driving and on average, these cars get the low 20s or high teens.

1.) List the cars available to you please.

2.) You still haven't addressed how you plan to pay for all of this with no income.

I have enough money saved, so even though I may not have income, I do have money to purchase the car.
Volvo S60, LS400 and FJ Cruiser. The first one is actually one of my sister's cars that "by the grace of god" I'm allowed to drive while she is away, but soon as she comes back, I completely relinquish my ability to drive it at all because it is in fact her car, though my dad owns the title to it.

You have the money to buy it, perform the engine/transmission swap and other modifications you want to do, and then maintain it, put gas in it, etc.?

I'm trying to budget my purchase of the car and the possible future modifications I make to the car. So for example if I'm going to buy a transmission and engine with the associated components, I don't want to spend no more than the price of the "mod" components + the initial price of the car. The most ideal for me would be to get a good body with a messed up engine, buy the replacement engine and tranny and then do work on it, but I guess I'll have to pay up for an already working car since I don't have very much experience as it currently stands so that'll be a project that I'll plan for in the future, but won't have to work on straight away. At the very minimum, I'll just do a transmission swap which should yield to me the gains that I'm looking for.

I see. Well I'm afraid that the answer to your question isn't that clear cut. You may be able to find a decent car for that cheap, but you may not. And yes, some people do overprice their stuff on Craigslist in anticipation of lowball offers, but not everyone does. My advice would be to get with the buyer and say "hey, let's talk straight here, if the car's in good shape, then I'm interested in buying, so what's your bottom line?" There's no point in driving a long ways or flying somewhere to see a car that's out of your price range without knowing for sure that the seller would accept an offer you can afford.

As for the scan tool question, you could do that, or better yet, ask the seller if you can take the car to a local mechanic for an inspection before you buy...

Ok, well as for a local mechanic which seems to be an idea people like to throw around, I'm not sure whom I should take it to. Should I go on the safe side and take it to a dealership to have it inspected or should I try to find someone who is going to be more meticulous but at the same time more difficult to find as it will be me just shooting in the dark...?

buy a used Prius. They have great mileage, and they're safe because they only go 50 mph :)
