I have to agree with E, for the most part...It is their job to recruit you, if they leave out some details, call it a lie or bending the truth or whatever, they still have to get people to join up. I spent four years in the service, and I was surprised when I found out it wasn't really like my recruiter said it would be.

all i got to say is get a college education and go in as an officer, get an ROTC scholarship, which for the most part are easy to get. go to a good school that they pay for and get a good education and a for sure job after college

That's a nice view of things. I wish it were that easy. Some people, such as myself, were better suited for the enlisted ranks. I graduated high school with a 3.6 GPA. All I had were college classes for my Junior and Senior years, but never actually went to college. I went Infantry with all the schools I could whore out of the Army. Sure, it's not the road for everyone, but I feel my guys trusted me and respected me more than any officer. Oh well, it was a short rant on a rainy, boring day

i understand that it is not for everyone and that some people would rather go enlisted. i am doing Army ROTC at my school which cost more than an arm and a leg. I plan on branching in Infantry, but time will tell. i am not dogging any enlisted people, i just wanted to get at there is more out there then just going through a recruiter, who get all friendly and sometimes annoying, had a few all me.

I wasn't dogging you dazed, I was just throwing my .02 cents in. I hope it didn't come across that way, I apologize if it did. The military needs both enlisted and officers to survive. I was just suited more for Sgt. Good luck with your school though :D

i didnt take it that way at all

are you SF or anything like that?

Nah, I tried for SF selection 3 times, failing the forced march every damned time. I was talking to Lean Mean Marine in a thread called Santa loves the rice, my history is down there.

Didja jear that STOP? He's leadership material I tell ya! Ok, back on topic. As for your rank, I go along with the others that said it's impossible to tell. I have personally witnessed people spend 6-8 years and get out as an E-4 Specialist. There's a ton of factors to rank: Time in grade, awards, points, skills, open slots, M.O.S weight, etc. etc. Time in grade refers to the amount of time you have spent at your current rank (not that I can remember the times, sorry). Awards go on your personal service record and reflect nicely. Skills play a part as to what may be needed in order to progress. Open slots may play a part, you may be able to acheive a higher rank if there's a need for someone in a leadership position and you have the ability and skills. MOS weight...I am referring to how many people are in your MOS and how many are competing for a higher rank. When you get up to the Specialist promotable (Army rank) area, you will have to aquire points in order to test and go through the PLDC course (once again Army, I am unsure about the Marines). I may have some things mixed up, but this is how I rememebr them and I'm sure things have changed.

I guess the military really is something more than a friendship, its a brotherhood, you are cool, thanks snyper, tell me your real name, I am Brian K. Thanks man for all the help

I got a 14 minute long Mexican name  but to my friends, I'm Tony. Like I've told you before Brian, if you ever need anything at all, you better call me!

umm back to the topic, i am a cadet private first class, dont know how the cadet ranging works just that the cadre like me and see me as a leader, blah blah, i was joking around and the like people that have fun, congrates to your advancement and hope you get many more.

Has he been in touch with you as much as he was before you signed up?

Yea right, haha, I was lucky to get two words out of mine afterwards. But yes, drill pay is for the reserves.

All recruiters are different, mine calls me everyday. You cant speak for everyone.

you changed your name tooo?!?!

dude, i've talked to you about this before. no offense, if you think you can make E-9 in 5 years, you need more information about the military. i understand you are getting ready to leave. but you need to make sure it is for you. i was in the air force for 4 years. trust me, and everybody, they will say go in the air force. but it's your decision. people in the military are broke, but if you are worried about money. i would suggest don't spend anything, until you get to your permanent duty station. then you will have money saved and you will be set. but it sounds to me that you need to go to a base and experience the life and ask people about what they think about it. but good luck with whatever you do man. remember, this is just my .02

Time in grade refers to the amount of time you have spent at your current rank (not that I can remember the times, sorry).

For th Army, time in service is as follows...

E-1 to E-2 is eligibe at 6 months TIS (time in service), 4 with a waiver (recommendation saying you're ahead of the game)

E-2 to E-3 is 12 months TIS (6 with a waiver), and 4 months time in grade(2 with a waiver) (E-2)

E-3-E4 is 26 month TIS (8 with a waiver) and 6 months time in grade (3 with waiver)

After that promotions become more competitive, as said before they are based on qualifications, marksmanship, PT score, military/civilian education, job knowledge/performance, etc...So the soonest you can get to E-4 is about 18 months, the fastest I have seen is E-5 in about 2 years, and a couple months. Also you have to have time left in service, they aren't going to promote you to SGT if you only enlisted for 3 years and have served two and a half. But this is for the Army, and the Marines may be a little different, but it is all DoD, so probably not a whole lot.
