is this department in the next county over from him? it's reasonable, imo... that's like me not paying my property taxes and then expecting schools to cater to my kids.

It's messed up that they wouldn't take his money then and there to fight the fire. He offered it. But he shouldn't expect the service without paying for it.

Airjockey, I get the feeling that you are against this, and that's ok. But your scenarios don't make sense to me, coming from you. You are in the aircraft maintenance industry, and you are citing examples related to that. Shouldn't you get paid (and hence shouldn't the owner pay) for maintenance required to keep the planes safe and functional? Certainly you wouldn't just perform the work with no pay just because they "need it".

but then nobody would pay for it until their house is on fire.

plus, someone could come back and say, "i was going to pay for it" or "i tried to pay for it".

you pay for car insurance in case you crash, not after you crash.

this is a way to let people not pay $75 if they don't want coverage. it's better than taxing everybody for a service they don't want. i don't use the schools, but i still pay taxes.

it all comes back to my above quote. dude knew the rules and tried to game the system. regardless of the validity of the system, fuck him for trying to work around it.

Yes I know. I understand the logic. But you have admit it's IS pretty cold to stand there and watch someone's house burn down when you have the means and opportunity to help. They were literally on his street with the truck and hoses ready to go.

I see both sides. They could have said "since you haven't paid, the fee is now 5x that for a one time call" or something like that. But they didn't offer him anything. I'm not saying he would have been able to pay that, but what if someone offered to pay ANY amount. Should they take it? (think in the amount say up to the total back fees since 1990, maybe more but not like 1mil) or should they still let his house burn down just to prove a point?

I fully agree that he should have to pay for the service one way or another. But I also think they could have offered the services at a higher price for a one time call to save property valued much higher than the fee. But if he refused to pay the higher fee, let it burn.

Ok now I have no idea WTF you are trying to say. I don't see the correlation of your analogies to what's actually happening here.

if your wife was being raped and a cop was watching and wanted money to help her... and there was no ATM around... and you was at work making money...

    expected services are services....

it's BS the fire department would stoop that low.... to want a fucking fee.

well..what goes around.....goes around.... when that fire fighter's wife's cars needs a little brake tuning...I'm sure that mechanic that just lost his house is not going to install new pads and new rotors...but he's going to grind the pads down further, and mill down the rotors to the minimum.....

It's only an expected service if you paid for it. He was under the agreement of payment prior to expected service. You will not, EVER, get something for nothing in this lifetime.
