I've decided I want to put an LS motor in my 97 civic. What year LS blocks can I use and be able to do a LS/Vtec in the future? I want to get just the block and do the internals on that first, so how far back in the integra family of LS engines can I go? What years are compatible?

You can use whatever year block you want. It'd be easiest to use a 96-up, because you wouldn't have to do any wiring at all initially, with just the LS motor in there everything would literally be plug and play (with exception of MAYBE, MAYBE having to extend a wire or 2. nothing serious though). Then, when you put the VTEC head on, it's only a matter of an obd2-obd1 jumper, p28, VTEC solenoid wire, and VTEC oil psi switch wires.

any ls block will work. there are NO obd specific sensors on the block.
a couple of the mounts may need to be changed though.
