Howdy all. I've been out of the Honda scene for a while, and while I do know about lot EGs, that's probably my limit. Recently I've been looking for a car to start racing HPDE in NASA with. I found an EF and I decided to snatch it up. The body is in great shape. The hitch is that the motor is not in it, and it doesn't come with the original motor. The original was a D15B2, and I'm guessing it's OBD0???? I work at Advance, and it wasn't hard to have some loyal customers start looking for me. I had one who just so happened to be doing a motor for a kid in that EF. The retard obviously didn't do ANY research into how to do the swap, and realized after it was too late that he didn't want to do the extra work involved.

Well, for 300 bucks, I couldn't resist. The motor I'm getting with it is a B18B1. I know I need to get a set of motor mounts for the swap, and I need the transmission too. Here are my questions........

Am I going to need the B18 Harness?

If so, what kind of adaptive harnesses will I need?

The Stock tranny was a Hydro. I know I'll need to find a B series tranny (*kicking myself for selling my GSR tranny now*). What other modifications would I have to do to the driveline? Will I need to get Teg axles? Will the stock linkage work mated up to a B series tranny? or is there a special linkage I need to buy? And will I have to replace the steering knuckles.

I'll keep my eyes open while I read through all the posts I can in this section, but ANY help you guys can give me from start to stop with this swap would be much appreciated. I'll see if I can't start up a log when I get going on this project. Would this be the section to start an EF specific swap?

THanks for the help guys, and I can't say how happy I am to be the proud owner of a honda again.

Ok to start out with yes you will need to get a adaptor harness to run the b18 in that ef. If it was running a d15b2 originally then it was probably dpfi unless the previous owner had done the swap allready. If he had not then you will have to do a dpfi to mpfo swap. There is a write up on here that I used that worked great to do that.

In regards to the tranny you will have to either get a hydro to cable conversion kit to make a hydro tranny work in your ef or you can try to source a b16 cable tranny out of a civic they are out there just hard to find. And as far as the linkage is concerned you will have to get a conversion linkage from like hasport. If you buy the motor mounts from someone then see if they have the linkage available as well.

alright. here's where I stand. the harness in the car is junk. they tore the shit out of it, BUT, the guy I'm getting it from said that the man he sourced the motor from said he'd give him a complete harness for the B18, so, I have the engine harness taken care of. I've never messed with the wiring in a honda before, so I'm guessing I still need to get an adaptive harness? I'm gonna pull the dash out too so I can see what I'm getting into there, but If i rip out the old harness, will I only need that RyWire harness?

I'm gonna give HASport a call today, see what they say. I know it's expensive, but I know what they'll give me will be right!

You probably don't want the b18 engines harness (neccesarily). You need the stock harness that came with the car. The connections on the b18b1's engine harness will not match up to the firewall connection on your EF. That being said you will also need to do a dpfi to mpfi swap on that d15b2 harness once you get it. Your probably thinking hey it'd be easier if i just got an Si engine harness because its already wired for MPFI. This won't work however because the plugs going from the firewall into the cars ecu are not set up for mpfi. One correct way is to find yourself a d15b2 stock harness for your car, and follow the writeup to convert it to MPFI. Or you send your stock d15b2 harness and b18b1 harness to rywire, and they send you back one harness.

As far as trannys go yes EF's use cable transmissions but that doesn't mean he can't use a hydro tranny. As was already stated he can purchase a hydro to cable conversion kit. Since he doesn't have the trans at this point however i would certainly recommend spending the extra cash on getting a decent cable b-series trans, rather then gettin a hydro tranny and having to spend even more on the conversion kit.

    This is what you need:
    -B18b1 obd1 P75 ecu
    -90-93 b18a1 axles (non-abs)
    -90-93 intermediate shaft from a 5spd
    -90-93 5spd rear transmission bracket
-90-93 integra driver side engine bracket (94+ bracket wont work)
-B18a1 manual speed sensor (if you end up using a hydro trans)
-Rywire conversion harness if you do the dpfi to mpfi swap. 9;. Rywire - Online Store
---If you dont feel condifent in doing the mpfi swap, rywire also gives you the option to send them your d15b2 harness, and your b18b1 harness, and they will send you back a single harness that will plug directly up to your new engine, and stock firewall connections. Rywire - Online Store
-modified teg linkage, or hasport/avid/ebay shift linkages
    -DA throttle cable
-b-series into ef motor mounts (hasport/avid/innovative/ebay)

I think that should just about do it

Much cheaper than HASport, works just as well.

D16SiHatch - Thanks a lot, that info helps. If I can get my hands on a cable tranny, I'll do it, but for the sake of getting this thing done quickly, I might just get the conversion kit.

Here's where I'm really confused. The car is an Si (just learned that only the Si has a sunroof). SO, isn't it already MPFI? I guess I have some real sorting out to do with the stock harness. also, i will have the the B18 harness and I already have the firewall connections from the b18. Would it be too much of a headache to splice the B18 firewall connection into the wires running to the computer? I know I'll still have to get the conversion harness, so maybe it'd just be worth it for Rywire to do it. I don't know if they'll be able to salvage the harness on there, so I might be looking at buying an old d15b2 harness.

    as far as that checklist.....
    This is what you need:
    -B18b1 obd1 P75 ecu <----------------got it!
    -90-93 b18a1 axles (non-abs)
-90-93 intermediate shaft from a 5spd<--------------------the one on the new motor won't work?
-90-93 5spd rear transmission bracket <-----------------being bid on right now on ebay
-90-93 integra driver side engine bracket (94+ bracket wont work) <can't find one yet except HASport
-DA throttle cable <-----------------the Si cable won't work?
-b-series into ef motor mounts (hasport/avid/innovative/ebay)

my last question, once I get this thing over in my garage and start working on it, is this the page to post my progress, or should I do a progress log somewhere else. I figure I'll be asking tons of questions along the way.....

if it is indeed an Si then yes its already setup for MPFI. that would be good for you lol, just be sure it is in fact an Si. if thats the case then find yourself a stock d16a6 si engine harness. You'll simply swap it onto your b18b1 and then drop it in the car. after that youll hook up the ecu jumper and then run the subharness connections through the firewall and into the enginebay. that about covers it for wiring.

-no the newer intermediate shaft wont work, has to be one from a 90-93
-i think your confused about the driver side bracket that i mentioned. hasport sells the mounts i know, but i'm talkin bout the bracket that actually bolts to the block that has the 2 studs in it. 94+ are diff than the 90-93. i found this out the hard way while doing this swap on my car.
-nope the Si throttle cable wont work, has to be from a DA

and i'm not sure about whether or not this is the place to put your progress. someone else will have to chime in.

alright, that's a big help. I knew what you meant by the engine bracket. HASport sells it, but I am going to hopefully find it on ebay or something. I don't know of a junkyard that would sell it to me unless they have a locked up B18A1 on hand....

Once I get the car over to my place, I'm gonna take a better look at my engine harness. I was told that only the Si's had sunroofs, and it does have what looks like an original "Si" on the back hatch.

I'm just gonna post pics here, and if there's a moderator that wants to move this thread, then they can feel free! Thanks for the help again.

This may or may not be a bit off topic but does anyone live or used to live in Illinois and know a place there where there are tracks that you can race for money?

Alright, another newb question. When I'm looking for a clutch for this sucker, can I get a clutch for a B18B1? Or should I source one for a B18A1? OR, will a clutch for a B18B1 work, so long as I swap the throwout bearing for one from what the original tranny came out of.

Speaking of which, The junkyards around here are dumb as shit, and if I don't tell them a year make and model they won't look anything up for me. what Years makes and models should I be looking for a cable tranny out of? thanks again for the help guys.

You're going to want to look for a b18a1 cable trans out of a 90-93 integra. The chances of a junkyard having a gsr or b16 cable trans are slim to none. You also have the option to find a hydro trans from a 94+ teg or or an EM1. again chances of finding a wrecked em1 with the trans still in it are probably pretty slim. Also do you want to go through the hassle of converting a hydro tranny to cable.

As far as clutches go, you need to purchase the one for the tranny that you end up getting. Doesn't matter what engine you're mating it to. Do make sure however that if you get a cable trans from a 90-93 LS or RS teg, that they are very certain of whether or not its a 90-91, or a 92-93. The input shaft on the 92-93 ys1 ls trans is 1/16 of an inch larger than on the 90-91's.

Well, I'm very excited. I'm taking delivery on the car first thing in the morning. Unfortunately, I can't do a thing to it until three things happen. I have to replace my sister's alternator, finish getting the cylinder head off of my stupid voyager, and then clean my garage out enough to get a car in there! that'd be nice.........

Anyway, Hopefully I'll have pics up tomorrow night so you guys can take a look at my harness and I can start getting some advice from all of you.

Too bad you don't live in the SF Bay Area...I've got a project EF hatchback that's been sitting in my garage for awhile, and I have ALL the stuff that you need to finish yours...including a Y1 tranny with LSD.
