Dude, if you can save up a couple grand and have a decent job, there's no reason you can't afford a cheap starter home. Renting is the worst financial decision ever.
Not always. There are several cases where renting can work out better than buying. An example is if you are planning on being in a certain area for a short period of time then it can be cheaper to rent.(Unless you buy the property way undervalue or the market picks up) But by the time you pay all the closing and selling costs, property taxes, insurance, and do some repairs around the house you will most likely be spending more $$$.
