legal or illegal engine???

i'm getting a car with a fresh swap...how can i make sure i'm not getting stollen engine or tranny??? what can i do to protect myself??? it's a jdm engine and us tranny.

depends on what state your in. most states don;t do a check of the numbers on the engine. and if you are in one of the states that do then i am pretty sure all of the numbers car, engine, and tranny have to be ran and checked
