If you buy a bike that's pre 1998ish, you're going to spend a LOT in maintenance and upkeep. What you 'save' by spending a grand on a mid-80's magna you're going to end up spending anyways fixing the damn thing. Old magnas are pieces of shit. Spend the extra change and buy something newer that's going to require less upkeep, ESPECIALLY for your first bike. Bikes are high maintenance anyways, you don't want something that's going to spend more time getting fixed than it does getting ridden.


But then again, I only work on bikes for a living, and spend 99.999% of my time on and around bikes, so I probably don't know what I'm talking about.
 
Before you even buy a bike I'd suggest you go and take the rider course and get your license. Once you've learned the fundamentals on a forgiving bike in a controlled environment you'll get a better idea of what you'll be comfortable riding on a regular basis
