It is truly a dark time for America when both of these pieces of draconian legislation are so close to becoming law.

Cements our government's image as corporate puppets and fearmongers. SOPA alone is bad enough, but the NDAA is some of the scariest stuff I have read out of DC in a long time.

I don't need a political pundit to tell me that giving the government authority to indefinitely detain American citizens under mere suspicion of terrorist-related activity with no trial or appeal is a very very bad idea. The government already classifies protesters as low-level terrorists. How many people are going to end up in Gitmo before folks realize what's happening?

I tried to do my part.... no one gives a shit, so i stopped caring that other people do. fuck the world, there's no fixing it.

Nobody knows what it is. There has been zero mainstream coverage on this. On FB, only Brian and one other friend are the only people to voice something about it. Other than FB and here, I've heard nothing about it.

Now after doing some reading, it scares the shit out of me.

I've talked to several people about it in person and posted a few articles on facebook too. But everyone is more pissed off at the supposed rich to give two shits about the constitution being shredded.

I recieve emails from DemandProgress.com on updates of these kinda of things. This is the one i recieved today

"Holy moly. We did it -- at least for now. The House Judiciary Committee looked certain to vote for the Stop Online Piracy Act today.

Instead, because of the work of so many rank-and-file Internet users, the bill's lead sponsor acknowledged that our concerns are legitimate, and adjourned the committee without holding a vote!

Of course, there's always more to be done. Will you shoot a quick email to Harry Reid to tell him to stop pushing the Senate version of the bill? He's threatening to call a vote in January.

Here's Wired's take on what went down:

The House Judiciary Committee considering whether to send the Stop Online Piracy Act to the House floor abruptly adjourned Friday with no new vote date set – a surprise given that the bill looked certain to pass out of committee today.

It's amazing work: Politicians are, for the first time, having to contend with the Internet as a political force -- and we might actually win.

But now we need to focus attention back on the Senate, where Marjority Leader Harry Reid says the PROTECT IP Act will be the first bill he calls for a vote next year.

Will you let him and your Senators know that they need to stop pushing this legislation? It's an election year, and they don't want to do any heavy lifting. Pushing hard now could get them to back down altogether.

Keep up the great work.

P.S. This week has been incredibly inspriring to all of us, and it'll probably inspire your friends too. Will you let them know what just went down?"

Well, it buys us another couple weeks of freedom.

If ron paul were in office, this should would be vetoed before it even touched the desk. Vote proper, or suffer for 4/8 more years..... if we even make it that far.

Ive done some light reading on the subject but I still dont understand the concept of the matter. Im a little slow at times.

Essentially they are trying to create a system where corporations or watchdog agencies could shut down any website they want on grounds of pirated content, legitimate or not.

Start telling people that they will have to start paying for porn, a lot more people might get onboard.

the fucker signed it.

You can now be detained, at the will of the arresting body, without due process, for the rest of your life. Think- sean connery in the rock. left to rot.

I hope you're proud of yourselves now, assfucks who voted for him.

Absolutely re-fucking-diculous, time to stock up on my ammo collection for when shit starts going down. Good old democracy.

Survival supplies and ammunition: it's as good a thing as any to spend christmas money on.

Also: Where are you getting your news? I can't find anything that says this has officially passed yet...

I've said it before and I'll say it again...

Let all this crap pass. We're the frogs slowly boiling in the pot, and we don't notice it. I say turn up the burners and let all this draconian crap pass and lock us down so that the average person can see it for what it is. Then maybe the country as a whole will do something about it that will actually change things.

But see, its the rich that are the problem. They want to kill old people and kill 8,100 people with that evil pipeline which may help lower our dependance on M.E. Oil! We are so busy arguing over Occupy _____ and "the rich" to notice all of this crap being snuck in. From what I read NDAA codifies what previous admistrations have used under Article II of the consitution. I am doing some more reading up on it but regardless of if it has been used in the past congress has given the green light to detain any one who supports the bad guys. From what I have read it does not define bad guys or what consitutes support.

Every two weeks I buy two weeks worth of food. Could someone spin that to mean I have enough food to supply a small group of bad guys? Probably. And if you have any amount of lead expelling devices and the lead to use in said device it will greatly compound your supposed guilt. Who defines enemy of the state? Who defines suppport and aid? To my mind this is why its all so messed up.

Exactly, Drake.

If the terms were defined and limited I could see some degree of justification.

The legislation as it is, constitutes nothing more than carte blanche to detain anyone they see fit with no due process.
