I was looking around for a small lcd screen to incorporate into my home pc, when I ran across this guy's project. I like the idea, was even thinkin abou doing that to my bimmer, but I think he could have done a better job with the installation. that circuit board sticking out looks tacky, as does the ir remote sensor... but oh well, thats just me. I'm gonna brainstorm and try and figure out where the heck i could fit computer components in a 2k4 x5.... wish me luck!

PS- posted this here cuz of the pretty lookin H on the front of the car :p

PPS- John, you're helping me put that screen into my shuttle when i get back to deutschland

Horrible execution...

Look around for a guy named "pixel9". He's one of my buddies that mounted a screen and computer setup into his brand new Accord. You might also want to look into the VIA Epia and Eden series of motherboards along with the Mini-ITX form factor. There's no reason to throw an entire full size computer into your car- it just eats up too much power, is a waste of money, and takes up WAY too much space.

Check this site out:

http://www.mini-itx.com

That should give you some starter ideas.

I got a story posted on Slashdot a while back asking a similar question about an LCD based main dash. Got some good replies for what direction to go with the hardware, if you're looking for low-power, high performance electronics.

My slashdot article :)

Wow- tons of responses. It definitely isn't legal to replace your stock gauges like that though- at least not without having them recertified.

Hey I have done a ton of research on this subject and am going to be putting one of these in my CRX soon. This is by far the cheapest place I have found to get one....

He has his own website and also note that he has done 147 transactions with 100% feedback (impressive). You don't need a regular car deck in the car, I would eliminate that completely. You can easily run the sound from the soundcard through, oh lets say an Xtant 603 amp and that could then run all your speakers. Subs/mids/highs everything. Also at his site you can add things to your purchase like a CDRW/DVD drive combo for like $150 or so I think. SO you pick the carputer up for like $270, add the power supply and all that for like $50-$70, then add this monitor....

and you have the ability to have GPS, play dvd's and never have to worry about changing cd's again all for the price of a pretty decent deck. I dont know how to wire in info from your obd, but I am sure someone here could figure it out. I talked to the guy who runs the nightrider sight and he's pretty damn nice. The dimensions are bigger than you are looking for however I know I will be able to mount it by the console in the CRX with a little modification. In my research I found that you have to be careful about

1.) Your power supply being very regulated.

2.) When you have the carputer turn on and off.

Apparently if it turns on/off with the car you can short it out easily. Anyway I have TONS of links to faq's and how too's if ya need them, just let me know. As soon as these get popular they are gonna turn the car audio industry upside down imo.

To prevent that, just hook it up turbo-timer style, as in, the car-puter shuts down and then the car automatically shuts off a minute later. :shrug2:
