Howdy folks, so, I scored an Asus EEE PC 900 from a guy as payment for fixing his other laptop. It's the 4GB SSD version, running a modified Xandros Linux. Yea, I know, 4GB, wtf!?!, but hey, it works great, and that's what SD cards, and external hard drives are for right? So anyway, on to the problem ...

When I plug in my Nikon D5100 I get nothing, the camera LCD turns on, so it knows it's plugged in, but the EEE ain't doing shit, nothing, nada, zip, zelch. I've used Synaptic to install just about every program available that has to do with cameras, and importing pictures from them, but still nothing. I can remove the card from the camera and plug it directly in and download the pictures, but that is not convenient when out in the field.

I've tried to register on the EEE PC users forum, but it's seems like they have the whole IP range that I am in blocked, The first two times I tried I used Yahoo accounts from home, and it instantly blocked me, then I used my work email from work and it let me get as far as creating a post, but banned me as soon as I tried posting it. I keep getting this ...

Tried contacting the admins but am getting no response, so fuck them, their incompetent admins, and their special little "community".

So any EEE PC users, or Linux meisters got any ideas? I'd love to read them.

are you wanting it to automatically open the camera folder? you could try manually entering the camera through My Computer

There's no My Computer, but the File System doesn't see the camera, which is part of the problem. There is a program I can download through Synaptic that can handle the protocols the camera uses.

Throw XP on it to make things easier? The processor in an eee 900 isn't going to have much horsepower to scroll through pictures the size a Nikon 5100 can churn out anyway.

4GB SSD, I don't know if even an nLite XP would fit and leave enough room. I was thinking about trying out another distro, some can be installed an run off of a SD card, but I can't log in to pretty much the only site I found that exclusively deals with the EEE PC family to get info on it.

And yea, it takes a bit for it to populate the files for preview even, I don't even want to know how long it would take to import one into say GIMP for editing.

I have an SP3 slipstream install that comes down to about a 700MB footprint on the HD after you turn off the swap file. Nice and fast. :)

Lemme see what I can cook up... you still have to do some post-install pruning with XPlite, but it does get down pretty small.

Well the Linux install is pushing 1.5GB so if it's already 700MBish then it will be great. Wondering about drivers and all, maybe I should look to see if I can find a EEE PC Windows image. As long as I don't delete my recovery partition I should be able to mess around and not cause any damage I can't undo.
