Oh kay guys Im very new to this. Practically know nothing except hooking up the parts.
I have a USR 8054 Wireless G router and Ive been using it for about a year now and its been pretty good. I just recently bought an HP printer with fax/scan/copy/etc... and I wanted to share it on my "network." Anyway, I just ran the Windows XP wizard and it works great. Except one thing, when I have the firewall on, I can't share anything. I know you're saying "DUH!", but I want to be safe and be able to share my printer. Don't want people getting into my computer and fucking it up, now.
My computer has a SP1 with XP Pro and the other computer has Home with SP2. Firewall setups in SP2 seems easier because it automatically sets itself so it can share the printer and filter out the bad stuff, plus its in layman's terms. But with SP1 the exceptions list gave me stuff in computer terms like POP3 or what not and I got stupified. Oh yeah, I don't want to upgrade to SP2 yet because it craps all over my anime media and makes my computer all weird and heard there are too many bugs. So waiting on that.
So I went on to the manufactuer's site for my router and it says it already has a built in firewall in the router. So my question is basically; how do I set a firewall so that I can surf safely (porn.....) and share my printer at the same time? oh yeah and how can I set my wireless connection so that only I can connect to it or people with the password? I tried doing it and I just gave up, so i turned off the wireless function for now.
Here is the support site : http://www.usr.com/support/8054/8054-ug/three.html
If someone could go through there and explain to me in, easy to understand hooked on phonics, how i can do both i would greatly appreciate it. alot.
