New iPods work with older cables?

I don't recall that well, but I remember hearing someone saying the newer iPods don't work with the old cables. Can anyone verify or debunk this? Main reason I'm concerned is I have the iPod interface on my stereo head unit(Panasonic) and just want to make sure it works. I had a 1st gen Nano before and now looking to get a 4th gen.
 
as far as i know, it shouldnt be any different with any ipod besides the shuffle.
but i havent seen any of the latest models to come out. but it was the same with the 3g nano.
 
I just use the headphone because I use rockbox on my ipod, but yea they still work.
