what year and what kind of car do you have? most of the time the ecu is located on the passenger side floor board up against the firewall, pull the carpet back and you will see a cover un-bolt the cover and the ECU is there. If the ecu is not under the passenger side floor board it is, under the drivers seat or even the passengers seat.
 
its gonna be on the passenger floorboard, just under the carpet. On the ecu there will be a clear hole where you can read the codes off of a red led.
 
pull back the carpet on the passenger side of the car under the dash, you may have to remove the plastic piece (the kcik panel) pullit back you'll see a big piece of metal that covers the ECU, and also a small hole... turn the key to the ON position, dont start it and it will flash the code at you. You do know the codes correct?
