I've got headers and a downpipe in the garage ready to go, minus the gasket.
I pulled the heat shield off my exhaust manifold this afternoon to get a better look at how toasted it is :chef: (very well, it turns out).

One of the exhaust studs has sheared off, though. What's the best way to remove and replace the damn thing? It's sitting flush with the manifold, not the block. Would vise grips be enough? Or, will I need to buy a tap & die set (from Harbor Freight Tools - Quality Tools at the Lowest Prices of course)?

Also, does anybody have any experience with a tap & die? :dunno:

    Not that anybody cares....

Well, header and down pipe are installed, adding an official 2000 whp to my ride.;)
Frustrating thing is that I ended up going to the local dealer for the stud and nut, assuming that it would fit perfectly. It doesn't. At all. So, I just left it out and bolted everything else up.
    :ranting2:
Also very frustrating that UPS lost the other 1/2 of my exhaust. :kick:
It was scheduled to arrive on the 4th, now I have to wait an additional 7-10 days while they search for it before declaring it missing at which point the sfx perfomance will ship another cat back.
    :bawling:
The probelm w/ that is that I'll be out of town for the rest of the month and I really needed to get all this done before my smog check in June. (for those of you outside CA, you can't register your car here w/o passing smog check) Arrgh!

    Technical question:
If down pipe to cat union is leaky, will it resolve itself as the system heats and cools or will I need to get some  hi-temp liquid gasket in there to seal it up?

    the leak won't go away

get the donut gasket, new bolts and (depending on the car) springs and it shouldn't leak

    Thanks.

The down pipe cam with some kind of gasket installed, but I think it's maybe like a 1/8in too short or something.

The bolts, springs, and nuts are fine. Besides, only honda sells them so, of course, they are like 20 bucks apiece.

Hopefully when I get back in town, the rest of the system will be waiting for me. I'll seal it all up right while I've got it up in the air.

Not true. I got a set of bolts, nuts, and the springs at NAPA for like $5 bucks. Just thought I'd throw that out there for anybody else reading this thread.

    Whew....back to the daily grind.

So, I have now been waiting a total of 28 days for my cat-back. I hate UPS now, never want to use them again if I can help it.

I'm sure that's true. NAPA told me the only way they could get them for me is if I brought one in as an example. All the ones I had were busy holding down the manifold. So that wasn't really an option....

Even better, the ones I paid the dealership 9 bucks a piece for (I only got two, thankSoichiro) don't fit at all. How stupid is that?
All in all, the parts and service people were not very helpful. Came away with the feeling that unless I was buying a new car, they could give two fucks.

Which parts are you talking about again? I assumed you were talking about the bolts, nuts, and springs that hold the header downpipe to the cat converter. I broke one of those taking my old manifold off when I installed my header. I just went to NAPA, told them what I needed, and they just looked it up in their book with the exploded diagrams. They actually had them in stock too, so I'm thinking it must be a pretty standard Honda part used on lots of models.

And oh yeah, if your header came with a flat gasket to attach to the cat, it won't seal. You need one of the thicker, round donut type gaskets. I don't understand why they even include those flat gaskets with the headers, you can't get a seal with those.

One of the studs that bolt the headers to the engine block sheared off at some point long ago.
They are 8mm x 1.25, I know this because I took the remnant that broke off in the block to NAPA with the new one from Honda. They are exactly the same. Odd.

Got the whole system installed yesterday. Yay!
A healthy dose on high-temp liquid gasket has sealed gap from down pipe to cat (which is the part that was leaking before, Brutal) and everything else bolted right up and fits perfect.

I'm not in love with the exhaust note. When I'm tooling around town it sounds like a riding lawnmower is chasing me. Sounds great when I really open it up on freeway, though. So...hmmm...to silence or not to silence....

Well, I'm not going to silence. I've grown to love the exhaust tone....espcially through tunnels!

Of course, since I failed smog (damn you ca.gov!) I had to put the stock manifold back in place. Sigh.

So, in the mean time, while my baby is at the smog shop, I've got some header wrap that will be much easier to install with the headers out of the car.

    Oh....I miss my baby....

Well, I need to contact the manufacturer because it was advertised as being legal, but I didn't get any paperwork. Grr.

Now the shop just called me because my car is too low for them to use their dyno! That would have been very useful information yesterday before I had to walk a mile to catch a bus home!

I'm ashamed to admit that it's a BROSPEED from Bosal.
