Anyone remember back when MTV2 played nothing but music videos, and they'd have these weird-ass random-ass 'commercial' things every once in a while? I remember there was one with some weird middle eastern guy talking about how he played the tabla, and he used to play doors and windows and shit when he was a kid...it was really weird, but kinda funny...

anyone know what I'm talking about? and does anyone know where I could find a clip of this online somewhere??

well, i remember when i was 10 (1990) they had beavis and butthead on. therefore several years before that they stopped playing "only music". therefore, i don't believe any memebers on here remember the "only music" days because most 6-8 year olds don't watch mtv nor remember much from that age.

I remember the first day of broadcast. I remember when Martha Quinn was 18.

It wasn't until about 1996 when it got really bad. I remember when thet still had headbangers ball and alternative nation and the only "show" was the Real World.

actually they were pretty much all music up until around 87
and even then for several years after that they were predominantly music videos
then they had music news shows like 120 Minutes (weekly recap of music related events) that led to things like MTV News and The Week in Rock
then they had Club MTV (a dance show)
then they had Remote Control (their first game show)
then they had Liquid Television (first cartoon show, where Bevis and Butthead came from)
then they had The Real World (first "reality" show)
then it was all down hill with more and more shows and less and less music

That'd make me 6... old enough to remember stuff like that. However my days of MTV included things like "Remote Control".

    I remember

I found this post while trying to find a video of that commercial with the weird tabla guy. It wasn't on MTV, it was on MTV 2, when it was launched in the late 90s initially to exclusively play alternative music videos. Lots of Beck and Bjork and REM. The guy was supposed to be some sort of Indian superstar who lived and breathed the tabla. I have no idea how to find that video, but I do remember it.
