I always thought it was magic and there was a unicorn with a golden keyboard in the TV.

Its voice recognition software. Thats why words that sound alike are sometimes put up on the screen, but it is also overseen which is why they'll go back and correct the auto system.

Not all of them, if any at all- I've seen the closed captions back up like someone is hitting backspace on the keyboard, and I've also seen some just start typing random shit for a few sentences or get behind and just leave a few lines out.

i've seen some of this myself; fox news and cnn = the worst.
