You can use component cables on a non HDTV, just make sure the 480p/720i/1080i is off or it won't work.

what i mean is does component give you a better picture even on a non HDTV, or did i pay 80 bucks for a cable i didnt really need.

80 bucks? I spent 30 on them directly from Sony--Monster Cables had shitier quality for me than the one directly from Microsoft for my Xbox. But yes, they are the best quality you can get for your tv, and they will work.

80 bucks for the higher quality monster cable. i didnt compare any prices i just grabbed it while i was getting my TV and surround sound. if i paid too much, oh well
