So I recently got a real job. It was in huge part due to a friend and that friend's uncle. I wanted to get them both something to say thanks, but I have no clue.

My friend, I could probably get him a restaurant gift card or something and he'd be thrilled, but IDK.

His uncle, I've never even met. I have no clue what he likes or does in his free time.

Do you guys have any ideas?

its pretty hard to come up with something when you know nothing about them
i would say restaurant gift cards could be a good idea, make sure its enough that he can go out and take his wife or gf along, would prob be a huge plus if your gift ends up getting them laid

    so details on the job??

Staff Accountant for a consulting firm. I'm still being eased into the job though. So I sit around a lot of the day, or do busy work so far. I'm scheduled to start real contracts at the end of the month though.

Yea, I like to do personalized gifts whenever possible, but like I said, I don't know the guy. And it was actually my friend's wife's uncle. I don't know her that well either.

without knowing the person or someone who can give you some insight to their likes or interests its going to be hard to not go generic

I'm loving the simplicity of Japanese gift-giving.

Had a baby? Send cash. New house? Send cash. Birthday? Here's some cash!

Nice thank you card, thanks for providing me with this great oppurtunity, yadda yadda yadda. Include a $100 Visa gift card and be done with it!

When I actually start doing what's in my job description I'll be auditing clients records. Basically, I go in to their books, and use external sources to make sure their numbers are accurate.

Currently, I'm not doing much real work yet. Mostly people passing off their busy work, which really sucks. Between that, and getting use to sitting in a cubicle, I've been fairly stressed recently, haha.

    read your handbook.

There's a ton of rules about gifting in the corporate world.

I cannot buy anything for anyone I work for or with with over $10 in value. Over $10, I have to file an IRS form for some regulation on bribery shit.

    corporate America sucks.

but learn your rules befor eyou suck up and get yourself fired.

The uncle doesn't work here. He's friends with one of the partners. I'm not about to send a partner a gift, haha.

Look at Rule Follower B. Make sure you only cross the street at cross walks amigo!

Stick with wine. Congrats again on the job. Have you ever done any audit work before? For some its their dream job. I'm not an accountant major though.

I do internal process audits and we work with a big 4 that has an office basically here, SOX testing, etc. At first it was uncomfortable, but after a while I got used to it. The testing processes can be a big cumbersome and require an hourly lap around the office for myself.

This is my firm job in the industry. I don't mind the work, when there is some. Like I said, I'm still being eased in, plus they didn't want to stick me on half done reviews/audits.
