So... everyone is probably tired of hearing about the same ol' same ol' which b-series swap is the best...

I have a 93 civic ex, and currently have a d16z6, but am wanting to move up to b-series. I am looking for something that isn't going to blow out easy like an ls/vtec does; my buddy has one and just threw out a rod, and I can see by reading these forums that its a common thing for the ls/vtec. But anyway... Im looking for a fast boosted motor that still has the reliability to it. Any ideas?? I have been thinking either a gsr, or a b20z crvtec, but a buddy of mine is trying to convince me to build a b16. Can anyone give me some advice and break it down for me? Any help is GREATLY appreciated. Thanks.

turbocharged motors normally dont have the same reliability as n/a motors unless built so.

the gsr is a good swap for the b series because it puts the most power/bang for your buck. it would be that same (almost) as swapping any b series into your civic, i/e harness swap and mounts shyte.

if you want a boosted "reliable" car you should go forged internals, pistons rods. and port and polishing of the head improves the air flow so...
oh and the b18c1 has a comp ratio of 10:1 so doing a low compression rebuild would be preffered, cuz low comp engines handle the boost better than high comp, and with the right tune you can be making the same power as a 10:1 with the same set up as you would running 9:1.

imo honestly though... im a sohc man and i would stick with the z6, best motor honda made in my opinion. and the 9.2:1 comp is decently "high" and you can turbo or supercharge safely with that ratio... and how awesome would it be to pull on a porsche and have him be like what under the hood and your like "1.6 litre sohc vtec, turbo, but im only running 10psi"
    my dream right there.

I have the D16a6/D16y8 combo and it has 11.1:1 cr. Is yours a straight D16z6?.

mine is a straight d16z6 with a zc transmission, so i have lower gear ratios, but the only thing really built on the engine is the aem intake (which just got jacked) and the knh coilovers. But i bought the car as close to stock as i could so i could build it on my own. And i like the gsr idea by the way. heres what i was thinking, let me know if you have any better ideas.

Gsr block with JE forged pistons and rods
boring out to a 2.0 litr (maybe) and of course if so, re-sleeving
    ported and polished b16 head
brian crower stage 2 or 3 cams
    b16 transmission
act stage 3 clutch gsr ecu chipped with a hondata s300 chip
    magnaflow 2 1/2 inch piping
Dont know what turbo kit to throw in yet
and skunk 2 suspension with the matrix sway bars i already have

I have arp head studs already for the b18c1 that a friend gave me, and a type r intake man. off of the car he wrecked.

so i suppose im kinda looking towards a poormans type-r, but i dunno yet. i was really set on doing an lsvtec turbo swap until i saw how unreliable they are with head gaskets and connecting rods so i pulled a u-turn on that idea.

I have a friend that boosted his d16y8 in his crx and that was nothing but problems and dont get me wrong, it was quick as hell, but he still lost all the time to boosted b16's and gsr's and such.

THANKS FOR ALL THE HELP!!!! KEEP IT COMING!

oh and by the way, i have a crx shell that i still have to go pick up from my buddy about 20 or so miles away, but i want to put the d16z6 in the crx and build that as well, but later on down the road, so i wanted a dohc motor for my coupe.

B18c5 is the best B18 going IMO, it comes with 170hp stock. I would snag one of those and build it up.

well if your doing all that work then grs would be fine.
and if its gonna be street drivin at all stage 3 crowers are way to much over kill.
    drag car... then go 3.

oh and if your gonna bore it out .20 over you dont need to re-sleeve it cuz you shave out the inside of the sleeve when you bore out. you should really just get a block guard along with the rest for a bore.

Have you ever heard of blueprinting and engine?. I have, but I am not sure if the machine shop will charge for that service. It will give you a detailed plan so you are not overpaying for anything and it ensures everything is in cunjuction with eachother.

yes to chuckshonda the y8 head will bolt right up. the only difference really is the vtec capability where the y7 does not have. Id change to stick though asap :D. but my friend just blew his b7 head and swapped to a y8 on a d15 block so im about 95% sure it will bolt right up. you may have some ecu problems though.

as for my topic, no i have never tried blueprinting a motor before. i am only 18 and these cars are my passion. Its what i do yknow? but i dont exactly know where i could get an blueprint but it sounds like a genious idea. saving money is always good lol. and what about a suggestion for a turbo gt35r? greddy t4?

A machine shop blueprints it for you.

if you want to go high boost i would say tdo6... cuz they spool fast and can handle a decent amout of boost.

ls/vtec or b20vtec.... if you are doing a complete bottom end build for turbo, you might as well. usually they can be done cheaper than buying a complete gsr motor anyways.

So you think that LS/VTECs are crap, but you're thinking about a B20 VTEC? What do you think a B20 VTEC is? It's the same damn process, just a slightly different bottom end. Why do LS/VTECs get such a bad rap? If an LS/VTEC blows up then it probably wasn't put together well. They can be perfectly reliable if you put the time and money into making them so...

Christ, just stop posting please. You're spewing misinformation everywhere...
