Im still sticking with my PassPort 8500 but thought I would pass this info onto others it's a great idea

I was considering doing something similar, but with the display built into the dash, and just the sensors in the mirror B)

cool cool totally stealth.

Very cool... but not at all stealthy. Anyone can see that red arrow on the rear view mirror from the back of the car. Especially at night. As it is, state troopers look out for the lights from the radar detectors clipped onto the sun visors for the same reason. The V1 sensors can be mounted in the gauge cluster area. I saw a nice kit at Turner Motorsports in Amesbury, Massachusetts, they're a BMW tuner shop.

I'd love a outside temperature gauge installed into my dashboard...

I could care less if cops could see it as long as people walking around my car can't see it when its turned off busting out a window to grab a 300-400 buck item right off the hanger is VERY easy to do =(

its ok to use a radar detector in everystate but VA and DC

so who cares if a cop sees it?

1. I, for one, drive through VA and DC several times a year.

2. I was responding to revolution8k's comment that it was "cool cool totally stealth." That install is not at all stealthy.

3. I've heard that state troopers in unmarked cars like to target those with radar detectors. They consider them chronic speeders that should be pulled over. I remember reading that they also like to creep up to cars with radar detectors and suddenly turn on their radar just to see the detector AND the driver freak out.

Neat install, but I'll stick with my passport 8500

i've had the idea of making a rear view mirror a 'stealth' radar detector for a long time. it's cool to see it actually done.

First off it is stealthy and unless you're LOOKING for it in the rearview, you won't see it...unless you're a chronic tailgater, in that case you need to be brake-checked and beaten down. I hate tailgaters.

number three is totally true for me. I had a state cop behind me friday afternoon, got right up on my ass and flippedon some K band...my radar detector went nuts...but I didnt. As I seen him pull onto the road and CONTINUED at the speed limit where I was at anyway. Not all cops consider people with radar detectors "chronic Speeders" I for one have only had my Escort 7500 since December 2003 but haven't had a ticket since January 2000.

I guess that perhaps my definition of "stealthy" is different from yours. Stealth to me is totally underwraps. And it is possible. I've seen the custom installs within the gauge clusters.

As to tailgaters... well that would be the state troopers in unmarked cars. I've never needed to tailgate in order to see the little red LED on the detectors clipped to sun visors in peoples' cars ahead of me. If a driver is aggressive and fast, I've always looked to see if they have a radar detector helping them. I notice the lights during daytime driving, but of course they are easier to see at night.

On long roadtrips, I start to analyze the driving habits of those cars around me. I like to see that other drivers are occasionally glancing in their side and rear view mirrors. I can tell from their head movements. Sadly, most drivers do not pay very good attention to their surroundings. But I do. I even have a wide curved rear view mirror. I need to know what's around me at all times.

stealthy...there's no visible radar detector sticking off the windshield, without seeing one, I would never guess someone had one.

If I ever get pulled over again I'm going to fight it and say the cop was tailgating me, the natural reaction to someone tailgating you is to speed up to get them off your ass, and that my friend is what you would call ENTRAPMENT. I bet I'd get out of the ticket after claiming that.

Anyway, at night I dim my radar detector screen so it's on it's darkest setting, Unless you know specifically where it is, even I confuse it with my dash/radio/heater controls as they're orange/red as well. :)

I need to know whats around me too, but I'm not going to glue on a secondary mirror onto my stock one. I usually do 5-10 over to keep away from the wolf packs.

Stealthy...

I can see people running with radar detectors from a good 10+ car lengths back, dimmed or not. They're NOT hard to see. If a cop happens to nail you, a radar detector in view will guarantee that you get a ticket. The same applies for tons of suction cup marks on the windshield, even if you don't have a detector stuck on it.

My V1 is going on the ceiling in a smoked box... I'll mask it by making it look like some kind of ceiling console with a compass and clock in it. My remote display will be sitting where the clock is supposed to be, just to the right of the gauge cluster. It will be nice and cozy behind some smoked Lexan. EVERYTHING will be hidden.

I've had this damn V1 for three years now, and I still haven't gotten around to mounting it properly. Oh well.

ill give you $50 to get it off your hands and give it a good home where it will be loved and well used :)
