The Raspberry Pi Launch

$25 Model A or $35 Model B gets you a SoC (system on a chip) about the size of a credit card that will initially run fedora and XMC (xbox media center). Model B will have dual USB ports and Ethernet.

Specs:
-Boardcom single-core 700mhz ARM 11 (think iPhone 3G/ipod touch)
-256mb RAM
-BCM2835 videocore (currently fastest GPU on the market)
-RCA/HDMI out
-USB micro power charger or 3AA batteries for power

I think it'll be awhile before we see it here in the US for cheap because shipping and fees come out to $20+ alone. Not only that, but these things are selling like crazy in EU itself.

Very interesting. Ive wanted to mess around with this kind of thing off and on for a while and never actually do it. Is this kind of like Arduino but assembled and configured?

It's an Arduino from a kajillion years in the future.

carputer for sure. Would be great for data acquisition in the race car too.

ditto. the main focus of the project is to reinvigorate interest in programming and assembly at an early age. with RP, if you mess up, you can format the flash card and try again.

its cheap, powerful and hopefully soon, plentiful. lastly, with the current nuclear explosion of ARM in both hardware and software, this will definitely give people a huge head start if they have this type of device early on.

Ill be tracking this for sure. Im sure if I got one I could come up with something to use it for. And thanks for the clarification. I should probably do some research on what people are using them for to get a better handle on the possibilities. The in car computer is a solid idea.

hell, i would buy one for each tv in my house to watch internet shows on and just have an overall network linked up to view things and control music etc.

im def interested to see where this goes.

lmfao, is that what the kids are calling it these days?

Damn! I wish I would have waited instead of buying my sony network media center for my room so I can stream off my roommates many teras of media.

This would be perfect because I'm actually thinking of building a stand alone unit and not just piggy backing off my roommates space.

Im tech-tarded, what the heck is it?

in essence its basically a smartphone like an iphone or samsung galaxy s that is stripped of all things and left with just the basis of a computer: the cpu, gpu, ram, and usbport.

the original idea is to teach young kids how to program since the US and UK are in dire need of good programers. however, people who do know how to program already are throwing cool stuff on it, first being XMBC, which will allow you to turn it into a $25 roku player, appletv or whatever you want to call it. or you can use it as a cheap ass computer for guests, nieces, nephews, or porno. fedora (linux) is the first official port and you can watch porn to your hearts content. virus? people dont write too many of those for linux, let alone fedora. got a virus? format and start fresh in 5 minutes or less.

if you can't understand the 8th grade description, then this device is not for you.

on that note, i cant wait to get one. use it as a media center thingamajig to pull movies over the LAN :)

^I'm with stupid. Even though I read your description, I still don't get it.

*typed on my BlackBerry*

its a really cheap and small computer. the size of a credit card for about $25 to $35 bucks. what you do with it, is up to you.

what do you do with your computer?

Exactly. I'm putting everything onto a home sonos database and hopefully getting a ipad 3 when they hit so I can scroll and select titles from the library without having to use a sonos controller, interface controller, etc and just use the ipad.

This will make an awesome carputer, and a GREAT basis for a security system.

EDIT: Damn, that's a lot for what you pay. I was fully expecting a SoC and breakout board, but this comes with the connectors presoldered and everything. I might buy a few to use at work.

I was thinking the same. If youve got any insight into how you would leverage this bad boy in that capacity id like to see what your thinking. Maybe not specifics per say i dont want to know the ins and outs of your setup but maybe a few pointers in the right direction.

Shoot me a pm or message on facebook if you dont mind sharing any ideas.
