BMWs awd was and might still be designed by Audi . . . so I wouldn't say it sucks. Its a good awd system. I'd say it rates up there with subaru and mitsu easily. Its just not that popular because you don't really need it if you know how to drive

Audi (Auto Union Deutschland Ingolstadt) never had any business / project ties with BMW, and they don't share technology at any level. Except, as Delco to GM / FORD, you may see shared electrical vendors between them.
