you're awesome for helping a friend out like this. thanks for the update.

wow, hope he appreciates the amount of effort you are putting into it. but, is he refunding the money you already paid on it?
or did you pay anything yet?

i've paid $3200 out of $5000 on it. we'll have to talk it out on the money, i think most of it'll get applied to other stuff i owe him for (he had helped me keep my sewing business afloat there for awhile). he definitely doesn't have the money to give back..

i'd like to have a few extra hundo taken off that too for the new radiator, exhaust, hitch, ball and and wiring stuff i've put into the jeep since having it, plus the driving it up for him saved him a bunch of money and time, too. might be enough to call it all even (all the help he gave me in the past, i mean).
:shrug2:

i gotta tell ya though, that jeep is a runner - not one hiccup and it's been across the country twice and up and down the mountains to see my grandparents 6ish times in 6 months. i'm not at all convinced i should be giving it back. gotta love reliability and all...

so - an update in the roadtrip journal:

this is the perfect time to see/be in minnesota - it's gorgeous and green, not humid, no bugs just yet - and maybe 80. i know better after having lived here for so long, though: enjoy this and gtfo before the weather changes. :D

fixing my mtn bike up to bring home with me (didn't have room with it when i moved last winter) this evening, and then it is off tomorrow ride a bit, hike memorial bluff, and get some cheese curds, burger and a beer down at the local pub (where everybody knows yer name).

happy holiday, all.

I envy your nomadness. If I weren't married I'd be bouncing all over the country. A wife and kids kinda changes all of that.

there are perks that come with every lifestyle. you've gotten laid and hugged at least twice in the last week. it's been months and months for me. :D

nomad/vagabond is going to my next choice once im out if this job.
going pay my rent up a month or two then hit the road for a bit.
cant wait.

sounds to me like calling it even may be feasible since you are doing him a big favor.

I know the feeling. It just makes you appreciate every single hug, kiss, and (for lack of a better word) bonk that much more.

carnage - recent roadtrip report :(

ok so i got back from MN last tuesday, got my rex emissions-tested and registered (plates were expiring 5/31), found out i didn't have to work this last weekend, and decided to take the rex bombing up the mountain roads to my grandparents' house in NM as a reward for passing the emissions.

turned 260,000 on the way, took pics of the odometer (will update post with that eventually). made some vids of the curvy-as-shit road (will post those eventually, too).

noticed a bit of hesitation, loss of power going up the mountain, attributed it to 260,000 miles on original equipment, and an elevation of 8,650.

car rocked fine otherwise. heading back down the mountain, i got a bit of backfire and hesitation again, and attributed it to fuel/air mixture at altitude, iffy gas, and made a mental note to do the fuel filter this next weekend and go over the fuel system.

car rocked fine across the desert at 85mph for a coupla hours - and then hiccuped 2x and died.

:( (this frowny face is an understatement, as you can no doubt tell).

it was too loud on the side of I-10 to tell if the fuel pump was working or not (my first guess), and after popping the hood and seeing no carnage, no fluid issues, no smells, no smoke, and knowing there were no fluctuations in temp or any gauge fluctuations whatsoever, i added timing belt as my 2nd option as to wtf had just gone wrong.

used my progressive roadside assist to tow to the nearest town (Deming, NM, sigh), and as it was on sunday afternoon, had to leave it there and caught a ride back home, where i lined up a uhaul tow dolly and my mom's pickem'up truck, and we brought my rex to the local honda/acura specialist, where it is currently getting dismantled and assessed.

this is nowhere near the end of my rex, so no :rip: but - it is a reminder to give your car flowers and chocolates when it makes a milestone - here i thought taking it bombing up some sweet curvy mountain roads would do...better to stick with the lingerie (belts and filters) and jewelry (head gaskets, o rings, etc).

stay tuned for roadtrip pics, vids, and an update on my rex. roadtripping is not an option for me for a while now (major fucking downer) - but at least i have my mtn bike in town now.

final note: the irony of the fact that i just took my secondary, backup vehicle (the jeep) back to MN to help out my buddy last week is not lost on me. Murphy's Laws are all still in play.

sidebar: i can't believe i never updated this thread with my roadtrip in the rex to san diego back in early april. i have pics from that too. oy.

ps i  my car.

:(

My car kicks serious ass! :)

the engine is FINE (yay!!!) and each cylinder checks in at 150psi (huge sigh of relief) and i can have my car back tomorrow afternoon. and it was the timing belt (still so weird how that went the way it did...add it to the records - and be sure to get yours done *before* it breaks ;)).

ps this post brought to you by the word 'and' - hehe. i can't help it, i'm just freakin' relieved.

woot, grats on the rexcovery! Glad it was simple and go conquer the road you broke down on. Show that two lane whore who's boss!

Sooooo.. You're in the market for a new motor. Keep an eye out for a deal and snag it when it comes along. 150 is aka worn the hell out.

Good that it wasn't detrimental though.

lol, :werd:

everyone including me knows this particular engine has put in a lot of service (260,535 to date), but i need it to go about 40k more before a swap for financial reasons. now i know it's time to start planning a swap for real. convinced it needs to be a d16z6 but haven't done the homework on what else i want/need to do. i guess that starts pretty soon so i can start saving, too.

thanks everyone for checking in on my thread!

Another 40k for financial reasons.. F that. 300k is just such a sweet number on the original. I wanted my CB7 to hit that so bad, missed by 12k :(. Damn magical deer.

I hope you have better luck than I did when my timing belt went.
The car ran fine, but smoked like a son of a bitch, presumably from tapping a valve which then destroyed the valve seal. I also never pulled a compression test, just threw a new belt on and went for it.

I don't think you want to go with a D16z6. You'll probably be disappointed with it.
A fresher motor would probably give you about the same thrill as the Z6, and it'll be cheaper once you factor in the OBD conversion harness and new ecu.

Honestly, I would go for a d16y8, and just convert it to obd-whatever for the chassis. Then you'll have a newer engine, with more parts available for when something goes horribly wrong.

EDIT:
Even a d16y7 would be a good choice.

the y7 has 2 more HP than the z6..i have a z6 in my 93 coupe and it pulls pretty nicecly..if your just looking to bolt in and go then the z6 is a great option,.

all great input - i might have to create a build options thread with a poll to capture this stuff.
