My exhaust tip is black from soot. I believe the engine is running very rich. Is there anything that would be causing this, and how do i correct it. Is it possible to lean it out and get better gas mileage? Thanks.

get a new o2 sensor, if yours is lazy it will make the car run rich and probably won;t throw a check engine light.
recomended replacement for heated o2 sensors is 90-100,000 miles, 50-60,000 for non heated sensors

make sure you get a direct fit and not a universal fit if you are not comfortable with soldering and using shrink tubing.
