Screeching/grinding noise

i originally posted this in the nissantech forum but didnt get any answers, just another question.
anyway my mom has a 93 nissan quest minivan with a vg30/auto and when you start the car and the ignition key goes back to the "on" position there is a loud screech/grinding noise as if the starter gear is grinding when you try to start the car when the car is already started, but it happens like a second or two after the car is started. im thinking its a bad solenoid but dont know for sure. can anyone help me?

i had that problem with my crx. it was worn down teeth on the starter. just replaced the starter and that fixed it. hopefully it hasn't damaged the teeth on the flywheel yet. i got lucky. my flywheel was still ok.
