shift rod pin help

I am trying to get my car back together and I'm having a problem. The pin that holds the shift rod to the tranny will only go half way in. How can I get it to go all the way in? I have ordered a new pin just to make sure that mine isn't messed up. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

make sure that it is all the way lined up. push the linkage all the way forward, then pound it in. Tap it at first, and once you have it started, just pound away.

spray it with some lubricant. Bolt break away shit something like that. To reduce the friction then smak it in
