See we fight wars a lot differently than we did during WW II. Desert Storm we stopped short and there is a chance we would have fought a similar war in 91. See back during the big one we carpet bombed, we leveled towns and with artillery, we gassed, and we even nuked. So what kind of resistence would be left after six months to a year of constant death? Now that we are all so much smarter with warfare and technology we focus on precision air strikes and small unit tactics. So our occupation after V-day in Iraq was so much harsher because we did not completely destroy the opposition mentally as well as physically.

If we had continued forward in 91 it probably would have been a LOT worse than this war, as the people would have been more aligned with Saddam, BUT, this war wouldn't have happened, at lease not for another twenty years.

The problem with the wars we fight now is that we are fighting an intangible enemy ...terror. So, we have to remain sensible to the local nationals, and still wage a campaign of violence of action, those two don't reconcile well.

That is probably a fair assessment. There was zero security during the opening days of the occupation. We had Marines trying to act like social workers, promising water/power/food which we could not deliver and disbanded the military and police force out right. Internal security blew apart at the seems. I truly hope we do not forget the lessons learned from OIF.

We should have blitzed the fuckin place in 2 weeks....game over.

Fuck diplomacy and dragging that shit out. How many fewer people would have died if we had just raped the country end to end from the start?

    getting deployed... haven't left yet.

But I have 2 friends, in 1st CAV, both tankers (M1A2 Abrams) that are falling in on Tanks in Iraq. 3 buddies in 3rd INFANTRY division, that are headed out to Iraq within a month. Its just to shut "the people" up and tell them what they want to hear at the expensive of those who are serving.... pretty messed up if you ask me...

That sounds about right. When I was there we worked directly with the local government, and had a Army battalion under our wing for training, that country was decades away from stability. For fucks sake they had lines three miles long to get gas, and they would run out by noon, politicians still require armed guards, and escorts. No one agreed on anything, chaos.

50000 troops to "advise and assist" until all troops are gone at the end of next year.

    Right.
