Speedometer problem and brake problem

When i drive my car my brake light stays on and my speedometer doesn't go up. its annoying because i have a two step in my car and when the speedometer doesn't go up the computer thinks im not moving so no matter what gear i'm in i cant go over the limiter. does anyone know what the problem might be. Also whenever i take my e-brake off the light still stays on. does anyone know what the problem might be??

thank you for the response. i will check that but what would u think would cause the speedometer to do that. it hasn't done it since i put the post up but for future reference incase it does happen again.

check your brake light bulbs and the wiring
there is a short somewhere
