don't mean to be a noob, but why is the intake pipe so much larger then the charge pipe comming off of the turbo?

easier flow for the turbo

More than that... the compressed air is a lot more dense than the intake air- so it takes up less space- meaning that you need a LOT of air coming in through the intake to fill up the charge pipe when it's compressed. The more a turbo can breathe the better.
