this is very disheartening. hopefully its only one of n. korea's "hey look what i can do; now lets negotiate," moments.

I doubt that it is one of his "Hey world I am crazy!" ploys, killing civvies is not a negotiation tactic. They got all pissed off because S. Korea launched some shit into the Yellow Sea and they thought it was to close or within their part of the sea. Launching a volley of 200 into an area that has a civilian presence is a disproportionate use of force. Unless they think China and or Iran is going to back them. And what really sucks for US, not to make it a pity party for the US or detract from the shit show the South is going through but if they fuck with our troops/base/interests in any way shape or form we will have no choice but to respond. Complicating it even further if they mess with Japan we will again have no choice but to get involved.

I wonder which carrier group will be sent over.... Unless we have something in Hawaii or the immediate area what are the chances we pull a group out of the Straight of Hormuz??

But who the hell knows this is all based off my impression of previous situations. This Administration runs shop a little differently to say the least.

Thinking about it a bit more there has been a helluva lot of weird shit going on and now this. We have Iran strutting its shit around, a little while back we had satellites shot out of space, an unknown missile launch just off our coast, China owns most of our debt and now this. All of which involve countries that have some sort of weird battered housewife type relationship going on all involving mentally unstable leadership.

But maybe I am just being paranoid....

If I recall they should have the USS george washington and a full battalion right there in south korea for response. And the US is probably going to aid S.K. Interesting thing is, my roommate is supposed to go teach in south korea in january.

I figured we had someone over yonder way. I guess even if they where running around down by Australia it wouldn't take to long to steam up. As for your roommate; fuck that shit. I mean we will see how things go but I have a feeling the next few months are going to be a little iffy.

This was more of a playground scuffle than anything. A flexing of muscles in a remote area. It happened on some coastal island, not the DMZ. Everyone has too much at stake to start a war. North Korea is already in the shitter. I'm not sure if they can afford to start a war, or afford to lose China/Russian support if they do. The South has been doing great economically. The last thing they want is a war to fuck that all up.

edit: wtf are they doing bombing a civilian area. Maybe something is up. Next few days should be interesting.

Keep in mind the S.K. ship that was sunk by a suspected N.K. sub a few months ago too. Like I said, killing civilians is not saber rattling.

We have Marines, and Army on the korean peninsula right now. I've got a buddy thats over there and me and him were talking on facebook when it was going on. He said he was about 30-40 miles to the "right" (good cadinal direction right?) of the island and he could tell the south korean side was putting down a ton more rounds down range than the north was. None of our Soldiers were killed by it just the South korean military took some deaths.

I'm going to be ticked if my orders for May get changed from Afghanistan to Korea, even though everyone says Korea is a badass place to go for duty.

That's because S.K. is way better and more developed than Afghanistan. I mean Kuwait is a nice place to be if you don't mind the heat.

Yeah, but its the sitting around I'll end up doing in S.K. that I don't want. Atleast in afghan there will be a lot more patrolling and stuff to do.

If you're bored, might as well! Lots of good breakers come out of S.K.
