I've decided I don't need 3 cars any more, and being self employed now, i really don't want the M anymore. It's making me just have to work harder.... and since i'm not going anywhere, it sits in the garage most the time.

the ti is fun, but it needs more work and i've already dumped too much into it.

Between the M payment and insurance for the 2 cars, the bill tops $1000 a month.

So, I've decided to downgrade from 2 bmw's to one............

    Hyundai.

    yup. a hyundai.

I have an appt. tomorrow to test drive a 2.0t geneis coupe.
specd how i want it, its 28k.
with a decent interest rate and only 1 insurace to pay for (the ti actually costs me more than the M to insure), this should drop me to 600/month or so combined payment/insurnace. therefore, saving $450 a month, and having a brand new car with a 10yr 100k warranty to boot.

I still have the truck for winter, hauling, etc, so the rwd isn't a factor to consider (hell, both my cars are rwd now).

So, assuming i can get a decent trade in on the M (at least what I owe) and they give me a couple grand for the ti, I'm likely going to be driving a Genesis coupe as early as next week (the one i want isn't on the lot, so i'll have to order it or get it from another dealership or something which may take some time). If they want to give me $500 for the ti, i'll certainly be keeping it, but will still try to sell it locally.

    Am I crazy?

perhaps. but given my current situation, I think it's the best thing to do. It will move me from scraping by to having a couple hundred in my pocket a month to live on/have fun with /save.

I've tried to sell both cars locally and on forums, and i'm just not getting any bites, so i'm at the point of trade in is my only option to get out of the M.

Other cars.... there's not really anything under 30k that appeals to me right now. I don't really want to buy used, and everything else is just a lot of money or junk.

If you have other suggestions, i'm all ears.

The review mags have been giving great reviews for the Hyundai. Dubbed the new "lexus" of the era for this particular model. And the coupe was competive with a Z but I think that was the v6 model.

What about a 370z or G37? Im not sure about price but around 35k? but then again its 7-8k more than the hyundai, but i love the styling and the performance.

Either way, good luck with saving more cash and selling the BMWs.

The WRX doesn't come with as much power or luxuries as the Hyundai and you can't pick up a new sti for under 30k. The Hyundai also has the 10 year 100k mile warranty going for it. It really does seem like the best option.

He had an STI before, and got rid of it to buy the M.

If I were in a better financial situation, I would trade my Civic in for a Genesis Coupe. They have been getting great reviews and seem comparable to the Z/G cars. I'd do it, especially in your situation.

That Couple looks like one sick car man i would definately do it...though it's definately no M3....If I had the money and didn't need AWD i would get one in a heartbeat

Have you thought about the 2009 Mazda Speed3 with Nav for the same price?

and you wouldn't be banning me...my wife would ban me from any further talk on this web page.....:(

seriously consider the 370z. you can negotiate a lot lower cost. the msrp of $30k is really high, you should be able to get them down to $28k.

I have checked out the hyundai VERY closely. it was #542 off the belt. things may have improved after making them for a year.

    things i didn't like.

    1) paint quality had a lot of overspray. check the trunk areas. looked like a maaco paint job
    2) the doors didn't line up. when you closed the drivers door, it felt like the hinges were dead and the doors were sagging.
    3) the hood (and other front pieces) looked like what you get when you buy aftermarket honda stuff instead of oem. it just didn't fit right.

i would also consider the 3.8. it makes a lot of power. also, make sure you get it with an lsd. consider something used. they have been out for a while, maybe you can get one that has been traded in. be VERY thorough when you inspect it if you decide to buy it.

DO IT! Japnese carmakers have had the spotlight long enough! It's time for a new breed of cars to take over. Japan dropped the ball, so fuck em! That's why they shoulda kept Affordable, Turboed, RWD, Coupes in their product lines. I say go Hyundai, cuz japan isn't making shit in that class/category.

Just like the Silvia took over long ago, the Genesis will dominate!

out of the box, the v6 does have 80 more hp.
but, the tuning market will be on the 2.0T. it's basically an evo motor. there's already flash + exhaust kits making 330whp.

plus, the 2.0t gets far better mileage (5 more all around)

i don't want a 2-seater so the z is out. the G STARTS at 37k in the sport package, and i easily just racked it up to 45k with a couple options.
too much money, plain and simple. it's not a contender at all.

had an 05 Sti. the new ones don't do it for me. i dunno. plus, the mpg on 'em sucks.

    DOn't do it.

It's the "american car" of Asia as far as quality goes. Please don't do it. You'll hate yourself.

Although, I agree that it's stupid to keep the M when you don't drive it anymore.

    certainly not.

it's probably dead center between the ti and the m. i'd basically be 'averaging out' my fleet.

220hp rwd is a good of a time as any sr swapped 240, with a hell of a lot nicer interior, far better brakes/suspension (comes with brembos on the track model, etc) and its a new car with 21312312 airbags so insurance is cheaper (thats why the ti costs so much-- its all on bodily injury))

you don't need AWD. you need snow tires and to learn how to drive :D i had my LOWERED RWD ti out in EVERY snow storm we had last year and never had an issue.

i liked the 3's for a while... but mazda lost all my faith when 3 of them all gernaded at 80k. E's p5, justins p5, and mikes neighbor gabe with his regular protege.

I likely won't be buying anything mazda has to offer for a long time.

that's just............... dumb. so, whatever. you preach about not being racist and all that.... but, you just did it.

If you want to lose a friend over a fucking car they drive, it speaks lengths about your and your wife's character.

    again, i don't want a 2-seater.

if its something broken, it has a 10yr warranty on it. they will fix it.

i will certainly inspect the fit and finish on the car. I'm not an easy sell. they will have to work for my business.

all the track models (both 2.0t and 3.8) have lsd rear ends.

trade in = used = higher interest rate on financing. it's basically not worth it as it ends up being the same price at the end.

while i'm certainly not a brand nazi, the point is there.

Honda doesn't make anything good and they're all fwd.
acura's are too expensive and out of my budget.
bmw, i'd buy a 1, but it doesn't have a true lsd, and its also a bit out of what i want to spend even on the 128.... and i'd really want the 135.
nissan, all family cars and fwd garbage except for the z, and as stated above, 2 seater is not what i want.
toyota/chevy/ford/chrysler haven't made a car that appeals to me in 15 years. i'll likely never buy another american car.
    mazda, reliability issues
lexus/infinity/benz/etc/etc are all out of my price range
    kia/daewoo/econo crap isn't what i want.
hell, the rest of the hyundia line can suck it. this is the first car they've made that even attracted me to the brand.

IMO, there's nothing out there in a 2009/2010 model under 30k that remotely competes with it.
The new camaro is the only thing that comes to mind.... and, well, screw gm. i'll take the better warranty and likely a better built car anyday over a union zealot.

i will certainly be the judge of that after my test drive tomorrow. There is this lingering persona of what they are. 10 years ago, it was true. it was garbage.
the last gen tiburon was actually a pretty decent car.

and this new line up is going to likely be the start of a whole new line of thinking about hyundai in the next 5-10 years.

remember audis from the 90's? they definitely turned things around. i don't doubt that hyundai can do the same thing.

buy it with the expectations of a 30% loss in resale by the time you want to get rid of it. drive the hell out of it and enjoy it. you could even consider a lease.

You are going to get raped in the ass for a piece of shit car that has NO RESALE VALUE WHATSOEVER.

Ok B, lets talk some sense into you. You do not need (or want) a new Hyundai. You just don't need it. Its a Hyundai, so it isn't going to impress any chicks, any clients, anything.. Everyone you pass is going to think "That guy is cheap and stupid". You don't need the M payments either. So lets look at the current situation:

    1. Somehow you've decided you want a Hyundai. Toss that idea in the trash.

    2. You own an M that is too much, and isn't being driven. Sell it. Call car max, local dealers, hell, everyone you can get a hold of, and sell it to a dealer. You'll get more for it if you sell it to them outright than trade it.. They will rape you on a trade. You will be raped slightly less in an outright purchase, there is nowhere to hide or massage the numbers.

    3. You own a very nice, sensible, clean BMW that I hope by this point is paid for. There is your ticket right there. Its a very nice capable car. It doesn't scream "I'm a cheap bastard". It says "I have taste, and although it isn't new, I take very good care of it and am wise with my money".

Now look at the situation.. You still drive a bimmer. A nice one. You have no car payments (except for the little bit that you're going to have to fork over to get rid of the M.. I'm willing to bet you are going to have to pay someone to take it) Now you've freed up a good chunk of your income to go to more productive things.

And you aren't driving a bloody hyundai. Its all win.

yup. and i'd say audi still has a ton of problems.... far more than hyundais.

i don't like the idea of leases. too restrictive on mileage, and damage due.... plus there's usually a good chunk due at signing (3-4k) that i simply don't have (unless my trades factor out that way).

As i'm sitting, i will likely keep the car for a long time if i truly like it. If i don't truely like it, I won't be buying it.

I know i've tossed around cars in my day... but the m is the 2nd longest owned car i've had (behind the del sol, and of which 80% of its life it was on jackstands). And frankly, if it were paid for, i wouldn't be getting rid of it. but its not... i'm only half way done paying for it. so it's a whole new ball game.

i'm not too concerned with resale. i will liekly own it for at least as long as i owe money on it. (5 yr term most likely). 5 years from now, lots of things could be different. I may be on my way to getting married... or already married with kids. who knows. FUCK the future. live for right now and adjust as you see fit as the time comes.

EVERY car is a poor investment. I'm not buying a new car for investment purposes.

I've had the M since 06, and it's gotten me
    0 clients
    0 pussy

so, it's obviously not the car. lol

i want to replace 2 cars with 1 new one for less money. find me something under 30k that doesn't suck.

it's been on craigslist, forums, bargain news, etc etc since late april. it's simply NOT selling. that is the whole problem.

car max offered me 14k for it. i laughed and walked out.

dealers don't want your junk. they want you to buy a new car from them. when i was looking last year at the new m3, the bmw dealer didn't even want my car as a trade. "naw, we'll never sell it. we can do consignment if you want though". so fuck that idea.

i'm fully aware of this. i owe right around kbb trade in, so i should be able to go in even. Sure, i'd likely get more from a local private sale, but like i said, i'ts been listed since late april and only 1 guy has come to test drive it. no one has money.

if you're referring to my ti, it's a beater. the hood is shot, pain is peeling, suspension squeeks like leaf springs, it has cold idle/timing issues, another caliper froze up and is dragging, etc etc etc. it needs another 5k dumped into it.... ontop of the 5k i already dumped into it, on top of the 3k i paid for the car. i don't see it worth dumping the next 5k into it.

this was the original plan... get rid of the m. but its not going anywhere and no one will take it without a new purchase... so here i am.

I was under the impression that the Ti was a nice car... lol.. And the suspension squeeks after 5k worth of work was done to it? I'd throw that biatch back in the shop that did all that work and make them fix it for free.

Almost every car IS a poor investment, but many are poorer than others.. and a Hyundai is about the bottom of the bucket.

You don't NEED a brand new car. If you must have a newish car, Buy it 2 years old. Let someone else get their ass bitten off as they leave the lot.

Can I ask what you owe on the M, and what its worth?

I'm still going to talk you out of that hyundai..... Hell, go drive it. It'll do the talking for me.

Nothing wrong with hyundai, they make damn good cars now. They're no different then honda back in the late 70s early 80s, no one gave a damn about them and thought of them as throw away cars. look at the late 80s and on.....

hyundai gen, should hold up pretty damn well resale wise, I bet it holds its resale better then 80% of the other cars out there. It's a great bang for your buck car. The inline 4 seems to be a great motor for making good power.

I think its a smart move, however I'd go and test drive a 350Z, minor mods, springs, intake, and better wheels/tires make the car a total blast to drive. if you can find a certified preowned 350Z with a 7Y/100K mile warranty I think it would be a damn good option.

Test drive both the Z and the Gen, back to back and go from there.

370Z, still priced too high and hard to get any really good deals on them. plus they look like shit from the rear.
