The shop that installed my themostat said I will need new alexs because the boots are torn.

If the boots are torn, can't I just replace the boots?

If so where do you get them and if not what is the going rate to have the alexes replaced?

Is that something a DYIer can do or is it more of a shop type work, to replace the front axles.

    TIA

    Bob

you can replace the boots, but its a pain in the ass, dirty and self defeating depending on the condition of the axle (because youll be trapping dirt and shit in the boot).

if i recall correctly new (well refurbed) axles run about 150 bucks each (for a prelude) and we replaced one of mine in a whataburger parking lot (so yes, a diyer can do it)....

(I will say that we have also replaced drive shafts, carburetors, and tie rods in the same whataburger parking lot....its a central location :p)

Your CRX axles will only cost you about $60 each after the core return at any of the major auto parts stores. It's easier to just replace the whole axle assembly, and it's better for drivetrain longevity too.

Paid once got 10 changes out of them!

    Hows that work?

Were the axels bad and you just kept taking them back until you got a good one, or do you put on tons of miles and the alex don't last or what

if you race a lot you tend to shear axles (especially with a lot of horsepower), so if you break an axle, you can just take it back and get it replaced.

thats one of the few +s autozone gets. a lot of their parts are like craftsman tools. you take it back, they give you a new one, no questions asked (and even if there are questions, your answer wont change whether or not you get a new one).

Lifetime warranty. I preferred the axles to be the weak point in my drivetrain since they were so easy to change out, so I just let them break and bought new ones. I had suspension issues and lots of wheel hop that kept breaking them, so it wasn't the fault of the axles. They were plenty strong enough on their own- I just subjected them to abuse that would break any set of axles. After I fixed up my suspension, I never broke them again.

I took back good but rusty-ish axles. I broke off the little retaining clip and said it won't stay in the transmission. lol
