Transmission problem

My friend has a 91 civic sedan dx automatic. When he puts it in reverse, it just rolls like its in neutral. He said he can put it in drive and its fine. He said he check the fluid and its fine.

Can anyone tell me the specific problem and/or what needs to be replaced. Hes going to drop it off at a shop tomorrow and wants to know his options and what hes getting into. Hopefully he won't need to replace the transmission unless it will be cheaper than fixing the problem.

UGH, I don't need opinions on what you would do. Its my friends first car/daily driver and its not for speed.
I don't know much about auto transmissions and just need an answer relevant to the question asked please.
I'm not trying to be a dick but if anyone is thinking about posting their opinion and is gonna say something like, "drop an h22 in dat beatch and you'll have V-TECH y0" please don't even waste your time.
