I have a 92 civic hatchback and when I shift from a higher gear to first to slow down at a stoplight my transmission whines and is very hard to put into gear. when I go to about 2000 rpm in 1st it whines again. Need some advice on what could be causing this sound.
 
you shouldn't hit first gear unless you are going less than 5 mph. clutch in or not.
what's whining is yoru synchro cuz you are killing it
