My girlfriend's 1990 4dr auto is doing something strange...not always, but sometimes, when you start to accelerate, the car pauses like it's going to die, then jumps back up to the speed you should be at in relation to where you have the pedal pressed. I'm stumped...anyone any idea? I hope that I explained this well enough...it's a very odd sensation...help?

how much fuel is in the tank when this happens? you may have a hole in your pick up tube in your gas tank...are you throwing any codes on your ecu?

mine did that when I had a problem with a bad map sensor, sounds like a wiring/sensor issue to me

Full tank of gas (just filled up at the gas station tonight as we pulled away it did it, did it at a 1/4 tank too)...Map Sensor...clutch plate...hope not.

Others have suggested...spark plugs, wires, dizzy/rotor...and value in that?

same thing I was thinking.

This is a common problem on 2nd generation Escorts, 80% of the time it's a torn/ripped intake tube after the filter/before the TB. (allowing dirty & unmetered air into the engine causing it to basically run lean)

Question does it pause sometimes when you put it in gear before it goes? This should be more noticible in reverse. Also do you ever get a longer pause before it shifts like it is trying but takes a second?

If you answered yes to these then most likely tranny. try to flush and refill with new fluid see if that helps.
