if you still want a little sound, try just putting a catalytic converter on first. it will smooth out the tone and make it about 1/3 quieter.

    I know what you mean...

I got my Scion with this cheap axel back bit on it. When i get up to around 75 it sounds like i'm flying a damn B24 down the highway. I'll get around to replacing it one day when the Integra is finished...

think of a trumpet or a trombone.... these 4" tips that end up sticking out of the back of too many cars actually add the worst of any exhaust sound, imo. they actually amplify the sound much like a gay cheerleader screaming through a cone. i am not sure if this is the case with your car, but high flow cat followed closely by a resonator, ending in your choice of muffler and regular tip is ideal. the tip should be the same diameter as the rest of the exhaust (2.25-2.5), and if it is a dual outlet they should be somewhat smaller than 2.25.

another thought... following the final muffler you could increase the diameter slightly to give a more hollow sound without a large increase in noise. for example, 2.25 cat back to muffler, 2.5 from muffler to exit. i have never tried this but in principle it sounds at least interesting.

Silencers are gay. What's the point of putting a bigger, freer-flowing exhaust on your car if you're just gonna stick a plug in the end of it???

To the OP: I would try adding a resonator first. Magnaflow makes some decent ones that are straight though, so they won't impede your exhaust flow. Also, what type of muffler does it currently have? An oval-shaped muffler will generally sound better and less obnoxious than the round "N1" type that all the ricers are so fond of.

yeah it really is to each his own. if you dont want to shell out big money to fix it, you can always go to your local mexican owned exhaust shop (like me lol) and get cheap one put on. tell them you want flanges welded on the ends and it's no biggie like some people were saying. then u can unbolt it if you wanted. i'd say 2" pipe with a high-flow cat and a nice looking but semi restrictive muffler. it would have a lil sound. that's basicly the exhaust set up my buddy's runnin on his '96 eclipse GST...

it's hardly loud at all. on the highway, i cant even hear him over my mom's motor and road noise in her honda odyssey (stock ALL, of course). nice lil hum inside his cabin tho.

Your buddy could probably get a nice power gain if he upped his piping size a bit. 2" seems awfully small for a turbo'd car.

I'm telling you guys, the sound is all about the shape of the muffler and whether or not you've got a resonator or two. On my car I'm running 2.25" inch stainless from the cat converter back, with a 22" straight-through Magnaflow resonator in the stock resonator location, and a straight-through oval-shaped Magnaflow muffler, 2.25" in and out.

It sounds perfect, got that slight performance growl to it, but never loud, raspy, or annoying. Plus, the fact that the resonator and the muffler are straight-through means they're gonna outflow a turbo-style, but still be quiet due to the fact that you've essentially got two mufflers in there (the resonator and the actual muffler).

yeah, he really wanted to go 3", but it actually wouldnt fit around his rear suspension... and the exhaust shop was out of 2.5 and 2.25. AND my friend is impatient. that car's probably not going to last him long....but that's a different subject..

Yeah I don't understand when people are like that with their cars. Why spend any money at all for cheap alternatives to the parts you really want? 99% of the time you just end up spending more money to replace them with what you should have bought in the first place.

    Oh well...it's his car...
