I've been wanting to upgrade from the old ass comp I have now Product Specifications HP Pavilion 510n Desktop PC (US/CAN) - HP Customer Care (United States - English)

I was going to build a computer but other things become a higher priority.

Anyway, I got 2 PC's for free but I don't know which one to keep. I can read the specs but I don't understand WTF they mean lol...

    I got this Dell Dimension 4700 for Home (Pentium 4 2.80GHz, 512MB, 80GB) - Desktops - CNET Archive and eMachines Official Site - - T3516 Product Details

I don't plan on throwing all kinds of new parts at either one. All I plan on doing is maxing out the RAM.

So which of these should I keep?

Well HDD size doesn't really matter at this point because I planned on getting a 500 gig or so for movies and such. But it has the faster processor? hmm...

That's what I hear about the celeron's from reading around the net and such.

Well I got the Dell from my sister because she's had problems with it in the past lol. But she used it extensively so maybe that had something to do with it...

The dell maxes out RAM @ 4 gigs and the e machines maxes out at 2 gigs. Would the Dell with 4 gigs of RAM outperform the EMachines with 2 gigs of RAM even though the EMachines is said to have the faster processor?

celerons don't have level2 cache. the p4 even at a slower clock speed will out perform a celeron at a higher clock speed.

if the dell does max out at 4 and the emac at 2, then i swich my choice to dell. although it really wont matter too much with xp. unless you have a lot of shit running. on xp 2gb is plenty IMO. even if you put 4 you will only see/use 3.25-3.5 anyway.

Only for the first generation or two. Recent generations- even the ones based on the P4 core like this Celeron D- they all have L2 cache. Just not as much of it.

    Usually not.

I'd go with the turd sandwich!!!

But seriously, yeah Dell would have been my choice too. Even though it has a lower processor the P4 is faster and more efficient than a celeron.

actually i think both machines are about equal.

sure its a celeron , but its 400mhz faster and a generation ahead. but the p4 has hyperthreading and an extra 512mb on the L2 cache. so theyll roughly trade blows depending on what you are doing.

but id take the p4, find a cheap ass board and overclock it till it blows up ;)

The Celeron is still basically based on the old school single core P4 architecture- the "generation ahead" here isn't a major jump like going from Netburst P4 to Core. I'd still pick the Dell P4 system. Even though it's a Dell, it'll have a better quality motherboard- which is basically the spine of the system.

On the other hand, the video chip in the eMachines box is slightly faster- not that it really matters at this level.
