Buy 2. You're right though, Max memory for that system is 2GB and no more than 1GB per stick.
You can also get memory from Crucial (http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.aspx?model=Pavilion a620n&pl=HP - Compaq&cat=) but they're twice the price. I generally just use that site to determine what the max ram a system can handle is, and what the factory specs are.

I've got 2x 512MB sticks and a 1GB stick of DDR....
