fuck that shit.

:shuuder:: NEVER will i go back to manuel labor again. i HATED being an electrician.
i love what i do, wouldnt change it for the world!
Having to crawl under a elementray school bathroom (that was being renovated) in the middle of the ghetto, at 8am in the morning and being greeted by a shitload of fleas and two dead, decaying cats was NOT my idea of fun. the TYVEC suits were a fucking joke.

Working for the los angeles unified school district, almost 90% of all schools out there were built PRE 1950's....big deal? try ASBESTOS and LEAD.

drilling into brick that was layed in the 1900's, and laden with asbestos was not my idea of fun. respirators? ya, i think i read about those new fangled devices....too bad they only gave them to us AFTER they got sued in court.

more? ok.

Wire pull. yaaaaaaaaaay. Lets work outside in 100 degree heat in the middle of the summer time in the valley at a new elementary school pulling wire by hand, then come to find out your dumb fucking boss did not plan the job right and you cant connect to the transformer.

more? ok.

SLURRY POURS ....

standing on top of a 6 inch wide hose that has enough pressure in it to blow a hole in the side of a building trying to keep that fucker in the trench. i loved it when i got slurry all over my skin and when i got home there were nice little burn marks from the caustic shit inside.

sorry, im just ranting. seeing you post about being an electrician brought back old memories....
i hope you got it easier than i did. thats all im saying :D

On the other hand, out of ALL of the trades i worked with ....

Electricians BAR NONE are some of the coolest people out there imo :D
we had a blast nevertheless
ive seen most of that crap before also. ive been hit by 277v line on the back of my neck on a 90 degree day, while standing on the top rung of a 8ft ladder. Needless to say, a co-worker had to push over the ladder with a boardfor it to LET ME GO, and i fell off to land on my ass. I went home early that day.
I look at it this way, where else in the world can you not have a college degree, and make more than someone who does? I get great benefits, 401k, paid vacation, and furlow like right now. its all well and good though.

here is another one...

Dear Readers,

I've decided to stay in school forsure. For a while I was going to give up and just let the speeding tickets go by without being paid and lose my license, and because of you guys and 1 or 2 friends I've decided to call the court administrator and ask for an extension on the tickets. I also called a local business owner and I might get a job delivering pizza.

Some of the jobs I've thought about after school are Psychology jobs. People always tell me Im good with people. Being a shrink or a counciler or psychologist or something. I think I had a tough childhood and I'd really like to help kids with the same.

When I was 14 I got a gf and I think/thought I love(d) her. I was leading the varsity wrestling team in 9th grade, and beat the #1 and #3 ranked kids in the state... in the same day. After that I quit wrestling to spend more time with my gf... she dumped me. I got suicidal and her mom got a restraining order. She wanted me back, I broke the restraining order. At age 15 I was stealing my brothers car in the middle of the night to go see her, I would sleep for 2 hours a night and try to go to school. This obviously landed me in a correctional facility when I was 16, the stupid part was how I got arrested... my dad tried to beat me up so I called the cops... when they came he told them what I had been doing and they arrested me. About a month after being sent away my grandpa died of cancer. About a month before I got home, my dad told me my mom moved out. About a month after I got home, my cousin died in a car accident. I struggled through depression and stuff. This made me realise that I had a lot of knowledge to pass on to people and people kept telling me I was good at it. I think thats the job for me.

All said and done the only thing I would change about my life... is quitting wrestling. I think if I quit school I will regret it as much as I do quitting wrestling. I also hate my dad and hate depending on him, so I really dont want to work for him my whole life.

Thanks for the advice guys.

P.S. anyone know how much schooling it takes for those jobs and the types of pay they get?

Psychologist = 4 years college + grad school (2 yrs usually) then you get a job teaching if you had REALLY good grades or flipping burgers if you didn't

Pyschiatrist = another 3 yrs med school if you had good grades and want to make some money. Then after racking up $100,000 or so in tuition loans you'll work for a couple of years for chicken scratch. But after you're 35-40 years old you're set.

If you just want to be a counselor you can stop after 4 yrs of college. Pay depends on where you work. Bad grades=working for $35-$50k...Good grades=$100k+

glad to hear you made the wise decision...sounds like you have a lot of life experience to share with folks to help them prevent some of the mistakes you have made.

In the meantime, look into Big Brothers or a Boy & Girls Club where you can work as a mentor & see if that is something that appeals to you in practice as well as in theory.
