All Things Motorcycle - 150: Hearing Loss
im still trying to decide if i want earplugs or not.
hmm i wonder if its even legal in florida. i know its illegal to drive with earphones on.
yea but how old are you
I really have no issue with it. My ears are sensitive and I can't take people talking (Actual pain / shock in my head when people laugh or make sudden noises). But the bike is reasonable. Even other bikes around me.
Bus exhaust fucking blows though. Got a plug for that ?
^^^ Big potato?
OH yeah, I couldn't hear my 250 over the bus exhaust today either.
I think Doppler is going to effect here. If you rev it up at a stop, you'll get the full blow of the sound. But that bike sounds way different when you're outrunning the intensity of the sound.
I mean, you're not moving at 500 mph, but the sound is still way different when it reaches your ear, vs others.
25 next month
yup in about a year you will notice what big speakers do lol, well i did anyhow
I had a killer stereo when I Was younger. Now I'm not into it. I'm into sound quality, but when I picked up the differences in digital / analogue, tape vs cd (Yeah, I'm dating myself) and other nuances I realised two things:
1: I'll never have perfect sound
2: It's a waste of time and effort to even try to
I'd rather do headphones at a low volume. I value my hearing. This article is correct - and now that I read and comprehend it I can definately see what they are talking about. Highway speeds through a leaky or noisy helmet causes damage almost immediately (Go on one entrance and off the next, notice the difference)
get em, you'll regret it. I'm 22 and i can already tell my hearing is worse than it used to be because of my stereo. Anything else that i do with loud noise, i use earplugs, so it must be the stereo. I am to the point now that it i turn the volume up it actually causes pain in my ear, and its not even at a very loud volume. As soon as i can afford some good components for sound quality, i'm probably gonna ditch the big sub altogether.
Haven't you guys heard of moderation ?
ive also been to several hundred concerts which im sure were higher then 115 db.
Concerts are killer. I went to a Billy Talent concert last week, like 300 people tops, and well it was a tiny room with big speakers. I just now am not hearing the "ringing" that kept me awake while I was sick.
I think I'm going to use some ear plugs from now on when I ride. I know I need to more often at work(powertools) and I'm tending to wear muffs but its just hard to not look goofy in them.
How'd you like Billy Talent? I saw them open for Rise Against on halloween. I hadn't even heard of them, but they were awesome.
You guys are crazy. It's really hard to tell if you have hearing loss unless you get your ears checked out. hearing lose could be only in only one range of your hearing and because of that you might not notice it. To this day I can still out hear most people in my family and pick up weird sounds from all over the house that no one else can hear. go figure my left ear has hearing loss from god knows what. but the range that it's at doesn't make it a big deal, however 40 years from now if I were to keep things up. it could be 5 times worse and over a larger range.
Bottom line, if you put yourself in a loud room with sounds that are over X many DB YOU WILL HAVE HEARING LOSS I don't care who you are or how old you are. Friend of mine worked in sever rooms for years (computer servers) the fans killed off some of his hearing, to this day if hes in room that has light background noise, it makes it hard to hear people talk. all from computer servers....
People think motorcycle exhaust is that cause of the loss, but it's not. read that link and it states the WIND noise does it.
This has been proven to cause hearing loss, there's no question about it. Ask any older bike rider whos had a hearing test done.
Anywho who states they have perfect hearing but have never had a hearing test are doing nothing more then talking from their ass.
I'm going back for another hearing test in a month or two to see if my hearing has got any worse.
I now wear ear plugs when ever I do anything loud, even vacuum the apartment. I value my ears. and don't want to wear hearing aids down the road.
P.S if I didn't already say it, the wind noise covers up the sound of the bike, wearing ear plugs makes the bike sound even better, you can hear a lot more detail.
ive had multiple hearing tests in the last few years. one of my last jobs was at a factory where our hearing was frequently tested.
mine was always good.
That's the stupidest thing I've heard - it doesn't mean jack shit. My buddy sat in a van that burps 160db - does he have hearing loss that you know of but he doesn't? Could there have been some measureable difference before and after? Perhaps. But he doesn't seem to have any problems - he can still hear higher than me and he's been listening to loud stereos for much longer. Granted, he's not a dumbass either because he knew that if he was going to blast his system to and from work everyday he'd wear earplugs.
Bottom line is you have to use weighting to actually be able to compare different pressure levels vs. frequency. Taking 100db at 3kHz (most sensitive region) is like taking 140db at 30Hz.
well its all just generalized. some people smoke for 20 yrs without getting cancer, but its well known that smoking causes cancer.
everybody is different.
I loved their show. Very good. They're real big time in canada, and in punk in general. I've had their old album going on 3 years at least.
I saw rise against last year on campus here. It was pretty fucking sweet if you ask me.
