This is the 1st good idea the MTA has ever had.

Cash-poor MTA may put recipients of unemployment benefits to work again cleaning subways

Any timeline on when the cries of slave labor will be appearing? I am sure that this system is being implemented so The Man can keep his boots on the neck of the middle class.

I have been arguing for years that community service should be required of those receiving government money. If this gets implemented I will be the happiest conservative in New York.

I am totally down with this. If the govt is going to pay you money to sustain yourself and your family it is only fair if they ask you to work for it. Plus, what equates to a minimum wage job is the best motivator to get welfare recipients back into the actual job market. This simply works both psychologically and ethically. As govt. employees I expect them to be drug tested as well and if you can't pass than no job and no money unless you seek actual treatment.

This should be done for every person on the govt. till under the retirement age imo. There should be obvious outs for the disabled, etc. but those determinations should be made by doctors.

The simple fact is we need more work done than we have tax dollars for. If people need govt. money to make ends meet I am all for it, I don't like hungry children any more than the next man. But it is only fair that the govt. gets something for their dollar.

you're right, there is more work than labor force. Did anybody go to canada for the olympics? if you did, you saw that Vancouver was fucked. the freeways were under construction, the whole city was torn apart. Now compare it to China...China had their shit together in Beijing.

We need more road crews, building maintenence, etc. hell, just make them show up somewhere and sit for 8 hours a day. put them in a field where they have to clock in. at least they arent' fucking off and enjoying free money and out having a great time.

Im all for that plan. Maybe add landscapers and constructions workers to that list too. 'No one wants to do jobs that illegal immigrants do.' Bull shit. No one wants to get paid what they do.

I'm a very specifically skilled worker and in the last 10 years ive gone 90 days without a job. Mainly cause I'll do anything for money until I catch another job I really want to do. And in that 90 days I only blew through 8k of my 20k savings.

I've even gone back to checking out groceries when I was out of work. You're not above doing any job when you don't have one.

My personal point of view, and I couldn't be happier if they do this.

Is this for unemployement unemployment or actual welfare? I'm all for it being for welfare but not unemployment.

Yes the time that unemployment benefits are offered is too long but that's another topic... We pay for that unemployment insurance while we're working. If I get insurance on my car and wreck it in the first month, I'll get back more money than I've paid into the insurance so far... That's just how insurance works. No one says I should have to go work in a garage to get the check for my car.

Then we just need to rebrand the entire concept. Unemployent insurance has the same problem healthcare insurance does: it is unsustainable in its current form.

Fire insurance has been around forever because it works: the percentage of people who lose their home to a fire is tiny next to the pool of premium payers. In unemployment and heathcare the number of people who will receive, at some point, is almost always equal to the total number paying in. This isn't insurance at all in concept, the fact that we've called it that doesn't create a new substantive right to sit on your butt and collect cash while you wait for an ideal job to drop.

Instead, those who work will help you pay your own bills while you are between jobs. In return for this help you provide society with the extra hand it needs to maintain its day to day and you earn a wage for doing so.

Like I said, unemployment IS NOT insurance. If it was than the rate you pay would change if you actually collected against it and those who are "low risk" would have access to low risk pools to lower what they pay in. Unemployment doesn't resemble this at all, it resembles welfare.

i went to college with him. ROFL!

For welfare, i'm all for it.
But this seems to be unemployment, which is a whole other ball game and should not be exploited.

Employers pay to the state for every employee a 'tax' for unemployment insurance. When you collect, you're simply collecting what was already paid for you by said employer through out one's entire working career.

How are you supposed to inteview, job hunt, etc etc when you have to scrub a sewer that day?

I am all for signing people on welfare up for work, as long as they are physically able to. I really do not have a problem helping out a legitimately disabled person. I know this will bring about people getting doctor slips to get out of it, just like pot heads getting medical marijuana cards.
If they set it up right with a first come first serve basis for the good jobs it isn't really socialism. Give people the opportunity to move up and better themselves. I also think mandatory education to get geds, give job skills, learn english, how to be a productive member to society, and basic reading and writing classes. Like the people have to do 2-3 hours a week of learning.
What I say is if you don't agree with it get a different job and don't take3 welfare.

they aren't interviewing now, so what makes you think they would if they were scrubbing sewers? hell, maybe it would entice them to go find a job instead of something shitty. (no pun intended)

unemployment past 6 months = government labor

    welfare = monthly drug tests

    thats fucktarded
in NY its the NYS Unemployment Insurance Fund
and the RATE the employer pays is directly correlated to how many of your previous employees have collected from the insurance fund

so its kinda exactly the opposite of what you describe.

werd, except add gov't jobs to the welfare also

back in the day, when the US created projects to make jobs to better the infrastructure on the country, there were lines for young men waiting to sing up and work

do you think it would be the same case if we had such programs today?
i think people would prefer to sit home on their lazy asses and get that gubment check
