97 Civic Dx 4dr Auto?

I have a 97 civic dx 4dr auto and i want to swap a new engine. What do you think is the most practical and economical engine for a daily driver. I want performance without breaking my wallet. What modifications and parts are necessary to change from automatic to stick? please help I am new to the swapping genre and I would like to learn.

I think it would be better for you to sell the auto and get yourself a manual. i'm not saying auto is a bad thing, but it would be a bitch converting it from auto to manual.

but if you still want to swap in an engine w/out breaking your wallet, look into getting an LS

also, what kinda racing do you plan on doing? drag? autoXing? all those things should factor in on what kind of swap you want to do. nevertheless, good luck!
