730 kilobits per second

Storage - 89.1 kilobytes per second

Subjective rating - Good

anyone ever heard of or read about windows XP and 2K using 20% of your bandwidth? is this true?
Windows uses 20% of your bandwidth !

Microsoft reserve 20% of your available bandwidth for their own purposes (suspect for updates and interrogating your machine etc..)

Here's how to get it back:

Click Start-->Run-->type "gpedit.msc" without the "

This opens the group policy editor. Then go to:

Local Computer Policy-->Computer Configuration-->Administrative Templates-->Network-->QOS Packet Scheduler-->Limit Reservable Bandwidth

Double click on Limit Reservable bandwidth. It will say it is not configured, but the truth is under the 'Explain' tab :

"By default, the Packet Scheduler limits the system to 20 percent of the bandwidth of a connection, but you can use this setting to override the default."

So the trick is to ENABLE reservable bandwidth, then set it to ZERO. This will allow the system to reserve nothing, rather than the default 20%.
Works on XP Pro and 2000.

I jump up and down because I'm on a non dedicated line, i.e., cable rather than dsl but I still run consistently faster than pretty much everything else.

For the record, I'm also not hardwired to my internet connection, I'm running of a cheap linksys WIRELESS router so my speed should be a bit higher.

never heard of that before...

what does it reserve it for?

It said for windows updates and "interrogating".

I've heard of the backdoors being built into Windows XP to allow microsoft to see into your machine, but I haven't heard of an actual set reserved amount of bandwidth. When I was running the same internet connection on a crappy 333mhz amd k6-2 processor w/ a 6gb harddrive and 64mb ram on Windows 98 First Edition I saw the same connection speed as I do on my current machine thats running XP.

you didn't use quotes right?

i;m trying to do it now on a win2K machine but don't have the QOS packet scheduler under the network folder... wtf?

Bah, thats only .8 megabits per second higher than me and I get my internet for free. Granted you're not going to have the spikes I have and you'll be consistent with that speed day in and day out.

HOLY SHIT. I'll be damned. Both tests were done IMMEDIATELY after changing the setting, with no new windows being created, and no new applications loaded. Tests were run twice for consistency.
