coil overs vs lowering springs

So what truely is the difference, prefences aside. I, would think lowering springs would provide a better ride where as coilovers are more practical as they can be adjusted. But couldn't you get the same affect with springs and adjustable shocks?? What do you educated types have to say??

adjustable coilovers allow the car to be corner balanced, this means you adjust the height in each corner until there is an even weight distribution
